Story

The University Book Shop is a beacon of difference in an increasingly homogenised world – a haven for those who enjoy books. When you step through the door you know you are in a real bookshop – one of the oldest and largest independent bookshops in New Zealand. We have books for all ages and interests, whether your tastes run to modern painters or ancient history, classical music or computer programming, crime fiction or New Zealand poetry.

Our on-line shop provides access to over 100,000 titles. If there is a title you are unable to find on our website please contact us. Our enthusiastic, well-informed staff will be able to help you. Have a look at our book blog, it is just as eclectic as the bookshop: theubsreviewofbooks.wordpress.com

Billed as Dunedin's finest bookstore, I have to agree. Beautifully organized. An exceptional stock. A knowledgeable, helpful staff.
I have only bought from them twice out of necessity and both times it took 2+ months to receive my order and it was a whole ordeal. It either wasn't delivered and I was called a liar even though it was later proven to have been incorrectly delivered to nearby house, or they sold me a book that wasn't in stock and didn't bother to tell me it would take nearly 3 months to arrive the whole semester that I needed it. Both times my integrity was beyond reasonably questioned by workers, and I had to jump through so many hoops and pay $200 dollars for books that I didn't even have for almost the entire time I needed them. The only compensation or apologies I received were lack-luster to say the least and in the form of a "spend over $200 get 10% off, only valid for 6 months" coupon.... buy second hand if you can or just use the libraries or a friends, not worth the price or hassle.
Such a lovely bookshop! Unlike other university bookshops that are non-fiction academic-focused, this bookshop has a great array of fiction books and interesting reads. There is also a heavily discounted section for books that haven’t sold or are a little damaged. Staff are very friendly. We spent a good hour wandering around and left with a number of “wants to reads” on our list. Highly recommended.
The stationery assistant was so helpful, trying to find a particular pen refill for me.
Went on Saturday to the new temporary location, to buy a bus pass. Waited at the unattended counter for a few minutes, then rang the bell for attention. No response. The sales person was standing around the corner talking to another person who appeared to be stacking shelves. I was the only other person in the shop. I went around the corner and made eye contact with the sales person and returned to the counter. They ignored me. After another 2 or 3 minutes they waltzed into the counter, with a most insincere "Sorry about the wait!". Don't be sorry, just don't be rude to customers in the first place.
Only the best bookshop in Dunedin. It’s really as simple as that. Wonderful, caring, literary staff add to serious aggravation of tsundoku whenever one visits. And for me, that’s quite often.
Usually really friendly service with purchasing books and postage. Had a few frosty experiences w a particular clerk doing postage. Maybe caught them on a bad day? It isn't hard to be nice is it?
The perfect bookshop for all your bookworm needs. The staff always have helpful suggestions. Great gift options. Excellent wide selection of books in all shapes, sizes and genres.
This has always been a great bookshop in Dunedin. Something for everyone. There was even a children's storytime happening when we popped in. A really good selection of books, for reading, for studying or just for entertainment. Plus other interesting gift ideas.
Such a lovely well stocked bookshop. Not just for the uni students needing textbooks but everything else as well. If they don't have it they are more than willing to order it in for you. The staff there are friendly, approachable & very willing to help. A group of us attended a book launch there the other week & it was amazing how they set it up. Very well done & professional.
