We arrived at 9 PM, excited to see the little penguins coming ashore. However, it quickly became clear that we were a bit too early. A very kind older lady, who was volunteering there, explained to us where the best spots were to see the penguins and where their nests are located. She also mentioned that in the previous days, the first penguin didn’t come ashore until 10:15 PM. While this was helpful information, it also meant we had about an hour of waiting ahead of us.nnThe first penguin finally appeared at 10:30 PM, and although the wait was a bit long, it was absolutely worth it. Watching them waddle along the beach was an adorable and heartwarming experience. The way they moved and interacted with each other was fascinating and truly special to witness.nnIf you’re planning a visit, it’s definitely something I’d recommend, but you need to bring both time and patience. The experience is unforgettable, and seeing these little creatures in their natural habitat is magical. Just be prepared for potentially long waiting times and dress warmly, as it can get chilly at night!
Amazing experience. Saw the penguins emerge just after 9.30 and stayed watching them for about an hour. There are a local guides giving people advice on where to stand and making sure people aren’t standing too close to the nests. Lots of people but enough space for everyone to get a good look. Would highly recommend this, honestly on of the best things I did in New Zealand and it was free!
Drove there at 7.45pm but was way too early so we got McDonald’s and KFC nearby and headed back to the road at around 8.45pm. It was not too crowded and there were still lots of places to park along the road. The penguins appeared on the shore at around 9.10pm on 13 Nov. it was well worth the wait - to see them waddle their way back to the nest. Really cute! The volunteers were helpful in pointing them out and also assuring us that the penguins were turn up soon!
Seeing penguins in the wild is not easy or a given, the local ladies have made sure that everyone is happy and sees the penguins. They also make sure that no one endangers the penguins! Thank you very much! It was a great experience
As a Canadian, this was an incredible experience to witness. Watching the smallest penguin species on earth return home after a long day of hunting was so magical. The penguins are sooo adorable and boisterous! There are plenty of viewing spots and it’s free! You get up super close to them.nnOn November 23, the first penguin arrived 9:09pm by the rocks. There must’ve been 15 or so penguins. Please note they come a couple at a time and just hang around, keeping close to the rocks eventually making their way to the vegetation so keep an eye out. They are small and when it’s dark it can be hard to spot in the shadows but the volunteers will help point them out and everyone was helpful. Just follow the cameras, you’ll know when they appear.
