Jean Todd Maternity centre is an absolute gem. The staff and midwives are very helpful. Gabby Todd, Maddy and Wendy Hicks are great souls. They helped us a lot. Comforted so much. Never felt nervous about delivery of my first baby. Thank you Jean Todd Maternity centre
Atrocious. If I could give -5 stars I would. I was kept for over 8+ hours overnight in A&E in agony and absolutely terrified with what was finally diagnosed as a large gallstone lodged in my common bile duct. I have a needle phobia and had only just recovered from a spinal operation not there thank God, a nurse tried to take blood from a vein in my hand while holding my hand in the air! I had a panic attack and my husband had to stop her. They ignored me for that 8 hours, treating a drunk guy who broke his ankle and a lady with dementia. I couldn’t understand why, and asked for help many times as the pain was up there with childbirth. I was ignored by a young, arrogant female doctor. She and the other doctors were in their station watching tv. Finally she came and told me she thought my pain was psychological and she was going to get their Psych Team to evaluate me. I said Fantastic! I’ll see anyone, I have no idea what’s happening to me and I need HELP. She seemed taken aback and decided to send me for a CAT scan as their MRI had no technician that night. Voila! The scan showed a gall stone. They quickly put a drip in I coped as I was so exhausted and in severe pain and rushed me upstairs. It got no better upstairs. I would have been better off at Waimate Vets. The specialist was a callous, indifferent man who couldn’t have cared less about the atrocious behaviour of their doctors in A&E. He treated me like a moron and seemed suspicious that I may have a mental illness. A needle phobia is not a mental illness per se. I was very distressed by that time- having more severe attacks from the gallstone. I heard him say to a junior doctor “That lady looks angry”. Unbelievable. It was like being in a movie about early 1900’s mental asylums. Im a successful professional with a PhD, I was not in need of psychiatric care. A nurse saw what was happening and moved me to a room out the way and gave me papers to make a formal complaint about my treatment so far, she was alarmed but couldn’t do anything else, she said this kind of behaviour from doctors was routine. I could go on… but I ended up having an emergency operation in Christchurch as I was by then an acute patient. My advice is go there if you want to experience medical malpractice- my veterinarian treats my dog better than Timaru Hospital treated me. It was a hideous experience. Don’t go there.
Speaking for the Jean Todd/Maternity unit, it was excellent! I had a c-section and myself, partner and baby stayed in the hospital for 4 nights. All the staff and nurses were all so lovely and helpful, especially since we were first time parents. There was plenty of food offered, even for my husband and conveniently located free hot drinks. Every day nurses would check in on my mental/emotional health too, couldn't give a better recommendation!
My experience has only been positive. Wait times can be long for A & E but once in the process they have been fantastic.nUpdate, just had my surgery. The surgeon , anesthetic team, surgical nurses are awesome. The care I recieved in the surgical ward was outstanding. Caring, compassionate and competent nurses. I felt very well taken care of.
I was traveling for work, only in Timaru for a day, I fell over at work and broke my ankle, the team at Timaru emergency room were amazing!!! There process was efficient and the staff were so kind and caring, I felt extremely well looked after, I was in and out of the hospital in only 5 and 1/2 hours, in which time I had two X-rays and had a team of four to manipulate my foot into a cast. I was so well looked after! And so quickly! The new facilities at the hospital were also amazing! Such a good experience!
