I want to preface this review by saying, these are amazing pies. These are some of the best made pies I’ve ever seen.nHowever, I’ve been travelling up and down New Zealand for the past year for work, and I’ve been on a personal little side mission to find the best pies in NZ so I’m reserving 5 stars for the best pies I’ve found. However. the current 4.8 star rating for this place is on point.nnMake no mistake though, these pies almost take first place in my little pie inventory of great pie places. Firstly, the flavours are original, you won’t find these pies elsewhere and that’s an excellent point of difference to have in a small town. These pies are a reason to visit Westport. The way the pies are made is consistent in shape and size. The pastry is great, probably a little bit too thick for my personal liking, but I personally prefer too thick than too thin.nI tried the Venison steak and cheese pie. The meat was cooked to perfection, perfectly tender and the gravy was a perfect compliment of flavours, it wasn’t too salty, and there wasn’t too much or too little. That aspect of the pie was perfect. In fact, my only critique of this pie was that in my opinion they undershot on the cheese. I would have preferred ever so slightly more cheese.nnIn terms of the customer service, I think it’s perfect for the kind of cafe that this is. Additionally, the atmosphere, decor etc is good and well suited to a West Coast pie shop theme.nnThe cafe is small, but not over crowded, it’s got a nice open flow, and it’s clean to a very high standard.nnDefinitely an asset to the Westport community. It’s been 20 years since I’d been back to my home town, and I’m glad this is the place I chose to have a pie.nnThanks.
This made our top five pie shops in NZ. Had the Nanny goat and cauliflower, lentil and goat cheese pies. Wonderfully light crust and the pie was filled to the top crust with a fabulous filling. Right up the with Henry's Family Pies in Otane. Enjoy...
Delicious pies fast service & restock of pies even at 1pm. Salad and pie options. Coffee and drinks also available. Delicious flavours & thick pastry! Not much meat in smaller size pies but the ocean or was outstanding! Yum! Would recommend but be prepared to spend $10 on a pie each person
Loved the Tahr pie. The standout of the ones we tried. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!nVenison was a solid pie.nGreat flavour in the spiced goat, perfect amount of spiced.nLeft with a handful of pies to eat and working our way through them.nSeating available inside.nI can see why this place has a cult following.
I got the Wild venison mince & short jaw dark ale. It was sooo goood!! While travelling, I had some couple of venison meet pie along the road but this one is another level - The slow cooked stew mince venison and its pastry itself is soo nice. you can taste the butter on the pastry but it doesn’t give you that feeling of too buttery its just nice and balance which i think its perfect. No wonder why it’s an award winning pie. It’s worth trying it out.
