A fantastic modern gallery. I've visited half a dozen times and have always been very impressed. Well worth a visit.
If you are an art lover and you are in Nelson, then this is the place to be in. And on top of it there is a lovely cafe with amazing staff.
Lovely gallery with interesting shows; my wife and I enjoyed our time there which was only marred by a somewhat off comment by a cafe staff member who commented "you are lucky to be sitting at an 8 seat table in MY cafe" which made us feel quite unwelcome there were only two of us but there were other tables available in the cafe.
Always a pleasure to go here, love the cafe too. Lovely setting as well. Enjoyed the Rita Angus Exhibition today.
It is a good art gallery, keeping us captivated for around 45 minutes. I always love seeing both older NZ pieces i recognize and more modern and new work.
1st: the art gallery itself is a wonderful space & the art collection on exhibition when my wife & I visited 2Oct is diverse in terms of styles & also in terms of visual appeal. 2nd: we regret to say we were made to feel quite uncomfortable by a rude & ill-mannered woman staff in the cafe. She was abrupt & her manner can only be described as interrogating. She made it clear that we were NOT welcome in the Cafe. I don't know her name but she would be in her 50s & she tied her hair with a scarf. Shame really ; she ruined our visit to to the art galary. We did report her to a staff member in the gift shop. Notwithstanding the distasteful & unwelcome experience, my wife & I would like to say Suter is a wonderful gallery & a wonderful Space. Kind regards.
Saw many of what I would describe as masterpieces of NZ painting up-close and personal here. The comparatively small gallery makes it feel like I was getting a private showing of the works of Rita Angus, Toss Woollaston and Bill Hammond.
The Suter Art Gallery is on my list of top 5 places to visit in Nelson! The staff are very friendly and while we were looking at “Fire & Earth: Contemporary Ceramics from the Top of the South” we were informed about the works and their makers by very knowledgeable volunteers. An excellent cafe spills into the Chinese Garden and there is a short circuit walk with information about the types of trees growing in the garden and some lovely sculptures along the way. The gallery has a well-stocked gift shop and an area for browsing art magazine. It’s free to visit but donations are welcome, and I think, well deserved.
Great gallery with a bunch of interesting exhibitions.
Cool place to visit if you're crusing past. Lots of modern art, I'll let you be the judge if you're into that. Free entry, friendly staff
