" Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up". Pablo Picasso
The Pencil Room provides a welcoming space for children and adults of all levels to develop new (or lost) art skills and meet with like-minded people.
Class sizes are kept small to provide an intimate and individualised learning environment with personal attention and engagement from your qualified tutor.
We run after-school classes, evening classes and productive short workshops to fit in with busy lifestyles. Class sizes are 4 – 8 people (a minimum of 4 enrolments is required for classes to run).
Workshops can also be tailored to small business and individual needs.
No experience necessary, art for all levels!
Follow the Facebook page for news of upcoming classes beginning 1st May 2017!
Emily Armstrong
Master Art & Design, Bachelor Media Arts, Diploma Photography
Emily Armstrong is an artist with over 10 years teaching experience. She enjoys the challenge of helping students develop drawing skills and overcome obstacles of subject observation.
“When I teach drawing I am always working to bring about that moment of clarity and satisfaction a person has when it all clicks and they start to really see their subject.
I love the simplicity of drawing. There is a lot of fear and mystique around art and what I enjoy seeing is when someone who doesn’t think they are ‘arty’ gives it a go and realises that they do have a creative bone in their body! Art doesn’t need to be serious, it can be simple and playful. Making art can be fun, challenging and therapeutic and it can change the way you see the world.”
Emily works in a wide range of media including drawing, painting, ceramics and installation. She has been a finalist in notable national awards such as the Wallace Art Awards and the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Awards. She has a Master of Art & Design from Auckland University of Technology and has taught at Whitecliffe College of Art & Design in Auckland and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in Tauranga.
