We stayed one night on March 11, 2023. The Hermitage exceeded our expectations in many ways. If you are after a magical place to stay, this should not let you down. 10/10 While we were in a line waiting to be checked in, an Indian lady staff chatted with us for around 5-10 minutes just to keep us accompanied, what a welcoming gesture and heart warming thing to have after we had our exhausting hike through the valley track. Our room was just a standard king, which is on the 1st floor level 2 of the older building. The view is certainly superb for us, and out of our surprise the room was definitely also very spacious and clean, not like many other reviewers had said otherwise. I think they were comparing this hotel to other luxury boutique hotels, but this hotel is not about luxury nor personalized services, it’s about the view and the ability to appreciate the sacred mountains of Aorangi/Mt Cook to the Māori people and Kiwis. We had the buffet breakfast at the hotel as well, the food selection was superb too. Starting a day with the food and the blue sky, snow covered mountains was really magical. The only thing we hope can improve is the price : Before the pandemic we could get a premium room for a similar price as we paid for our standard room this time around. The Hermitage exceeded our expectations in many ways. If you are after a magical place to stay in this area, this hotel should not let you down. Thanks Hermitage for giving us a magical and memorable stay.
The location and the view was amazing. The service was great. Room was a bit tiny and bathroom slightly tiny. Recommend - get the breakfast and bed package which gives you 10% off because there’s no real other options for breakfast unless you plan to skip a meal. Breakfast was ok but not huge variety. We stayed 2 nights and both days breakfast on offer was the same. The coffee machine was a bit average. For dinner we did just one night buffet. Price is definitely a bit pricey for value but again no real other options unless you travel out of town. I found variety was better for dinner compared to breakfast. Overall a good stay with amazing views. We always got the window seats when we went to the restaurant.
The Hotel and it's Motels are pretty nice and do have the great views most reviews mention. Staff have also all been helpful and friendly. The food is the main problem here: with a virtual monopoly, the quality is so-so and definitely overpriced. The dining area seating also seems to have a lot of food stains that I wouldn't normally care about until required to pay $65 a person to eat there. So buy groceries before driving up!
We stayed here in November 2022 and were excited to check out such a prestigious establishment. Unfortunately, we left unanimously disappointed. I’ll start with the positives: – The view from our room was stunning – highlight of our stay. I’ll include a photo of it. – There’s a very nice life-sized bronze statue of Sir Edmund Hillary outside the restaurant and he’s a pretty cool guy. Really amazing craftsmanship. – The staff were really nice but I got the impression that there weren’t enough of them to do a complete job. Now for the shortcomings: – We arrived and they had failed to provide the third bed we requested, meaning I didn’t have anywhere to sleep. We had to ask the staff to bring it up. – The bathroom smelled awful; apparently there was a problem with the drain that we weren’t notified of. – I dropped something and when going to pick it up I noticed there was rubbish under the beds, leading me to believe that the room hadn’t been serviced after the previous guests. – Our room was serviced once during our four day visit and only after we had specifically requested it. From the impression I got, the Hermitage is unfortunately an establishment that relies on their age, reputation and location as a substitute for quality. I’m sorry that Sir Hillary has his image associated with such a mediocre place.
Small rooms. No cooling so if you get a north facing room and it's sunny be prepared to spend the night sweltering too hot to sleep. Food average at best as it's all low quality buffet that is the same exact thing every night. Incredibly over priced dinners for such low quality food. Bathrooms small. We stayed on two separate nights within 8 days of one another. First night we were given a twin room with two double beds. Specifically requested a non-twin room for the next night only to get... an even smaller twin room with two singles. First room had a leaking shower head meaning low water pressure to shower. Second bathroom had mould and a toilet seat not fixed properly to the seat. Second room hadn't been vacuumed - evidenced by the tape that was on my foot picking up numerous strands of thick black hair on the short walk to the shower. Pretty gross to say the least. The only reason this place stays in business is because they have a monopoly. Best advice on staying at the hermitage is to stay in Twizel at a nice B and B and drive to Mt Cook and avoid the Hermitage at all costs. If I could give a lower rating than 1 star I would.
Highly recommended! July 2020 was my first stay with group of friends. June 15 2023: Second stay with my sister. It was short but sweet stay. Room was warm, clean and good for 2 persons. They accommodated my request. Location and view was great. Accesible to the walks. Food was good. They have Cafe til 4pm and they have buffet breakfast and dinner. Staff are all very friendly, professional and courteous. They have parking. They are also renovating the back part building of the hotel. And that's promising.
Disappointing stay for the price. The hotel and rooms are very dated and definitely not worth the price. Firstly we waited 2 hours to be checked in, as their check in time is later than usual at 3pm, we got our room around 4pm but the bed type was not as per requested so there was further delay. The staff including the hotel manager did not offer any service recovery. Dining options are limited and average, we had the buffet dinner, and breakfast at the cafe. The pictures are better than the actual hotel offering, not recommended unless you want to stay in Mount Cook.
Hotel itself is a little bit disappointing, for the price you pay it was a let down. The reception area of course is stunning, you then go down a long corridor to be meet with a very basic room, despite paying $600 for one night. Outside the plants and weeds looked terrible, needed a good tidy up. Of course you pay for the view, but at that price you still expect some fancy stuff. The dinner however was amazing - buffet with all the trimmings, mixture of everything. Probably one of the best I've ever been too. The same for breakfast, same buffet and had lots of choices. Amazing. The museum is attached it does cost to enter, no discount if you're staying at the hotel.
A nice hotel with spectacular views. We had a larger room on an upper floor and it’s very comfortable. There’s a lot to do. Recommend doing the buffets, the breakfasts are pretty good, but the dinners are quite average.
One the best destination holiday experience with my family!! I might take long too write but trust me each words is is true!! Location: Brilliant snow mountain Rooms: very clean and well maintained View form the room: out of this world!! Food: delicious and luscious and so many food options. So many options for vegetarian too. Plus dessert options are amazing. Customer service: This place is must visit and stay here if you are in Mt cook. The place, people and food all is beyond 5.
