Garden on National Significance

The Giant's House - A historic Akaroa house with original artworks, terraced gardens with sculptures and mosaics. Very Unique. A creative feast and a wonderful experience. Romantic secluded and quiet, but only a few minutes walk to the centre of Akaroa.

The Giant's House was the first bank managers house in Akaroa, built 1880 of totara and kauri. It is grand in size, proportions, and features. Elegant and comfortable, it is designed and decorated in the french style. Being the home of an artist it balances and contrasts the historic and contemporary. Both the house and terraced gardens are full of surprises -expect the unexpected at The Giant's House!

The Giant's House has featured on top television programmes and in numerous house/art/garden magazines. The house has many extraordinary features - a grand entrance hall with mahogany staircase imported from France, original open fireplaces, beautifully proportioned rooms, a conservatory with mosaic floor, a large sunny sheltered verandah, quirky bathrooms, bright yellow farmhouse kitchen, comfortable large bedrooms with unique artistic features and artwork throughout.

What a beautiful, lovely place to visit full of art works, flowers and nicely laid out landscapes. We had a great time. The house is situated up the hill and there is no parking on-site but you can easily find the roadside parking near the house. The entry fee allowed you to visit the garden and gallery but not include the visit in the house unless you are in group visit with pre-arranged. Having said that there are plenty to look around, inspire and take photos. There is small cafe which serves drinks and cakes/ scones etc. Overall we had a good time. Please make sure you bring your camera/ phone as there are plenty of photo opportunities. Highly recommended place to visit. Thanks Jose - the artist for her amazing work!
I accompanied close friends to this attraction, not knowing much - if anything - about it. I was pleasantly surprised. The garden had very clearly been a labour of love for the artist, who had turned a functional fruit and vegetable garden into a gorgeous spectacle of colour and wonder. This is an absolute treasure and well worth the nominal entry fee.
My experience here was lovely. Lots of beautiful picture opportunities and awesome views from the top of the garden. Coming to Akaroa for this is totally worth it and easy to do from Christchurch. I totally recommend checking it out and bringing your camera with you!
What an amazing place! Words can't describe the magical experience of being surrounded by the fantastic whimsical statues and landscaping everywhere you look. Even without that, the garden would be worth visiting. Loved it!
More than your average garden. Very drawn to the fine sparkling details that filled our experience with connection and love. So thrilled to have experienced this place for the first time with my dear ones. A sweet and precious memory. One I will always remember.
Well worth a visit . An amazing piece of artwork. We were there for at least three hours looking at the gardens, mosaics and having a bite to eat while watching people's face as they lit up. Take your time and enjoy what has been created
An absolutely fantastic experience showing incredible large mosaic sculptures in vast numbers. The attention to detail, layout of the gardens is first class. If you are in Akaroa you must do this.
This is like Gaudi on steroids. Stunning!! Colour sensations everywhere you look. This is a MUST visit for all ages, garden and art lovers. Incredibly clever artist Josie Martin who had the vision for this gorgeous garden for all of us to enjoy. A thousand thank you's!!
This is such an interesting garden to have a wander through. Everywhere you look there's something to capture the eye. Worth a stroll through. Note through the off season it's currently open 11-2.
An amazing place to visit. I have to admit that the lady who has built this wonderful place has an amazing imagination. Definitely worth a visit if ever you go to Christchurch
