Story

[ Where it begins ]

In the 13th Century, the greatest land conquest in world history occurred under the rule of Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire was born. The Mongolian army’s daily meal was tenderised strips of meat carried with the warriors on horseback. After battle, the Mongols would go hunting with lance and bow and arrow. The meat, quickly frozen by the chilled air on the arid steps was thinly sliced and barbecued on their metal war shields. Slender branches from trees were used to toss the food – a kind of Mongolian chopstick. This meal came to be known as their “Victory Meal”, and has been passed down to the present day by their descendants. Today, the war shield is now a standardised round plate, still true to the original shape and metal. The small branches are now the elongated chopsticks used by our chefs.

The Genghis Khan Mongolian BBQ Restaurant now invites you to join us and eat in the manner of these great warriors, no matter what the occasion.

The Genghis Khan Restaurant has been trading since 1983, we locally source our vegetables and meats.

[ The Concept ] to create your unique stir fry

Take a bowl and help yourself to the noodles and the fresh cut vegetables of you choice. Add the meat of your choice - beef, lamb, chicken or pork; or any of the combination.

Then the sauces and spices of your choice. From our experience you will learn the combination most tasty for you.

Finally, hand the bowl to our chef who will cook the food in just a minute on our gas-fired barbecue.

Watch and wait, then return to your table with your bowl. The waiter will bring you our special Mongolian bread rolls ‘Shao Ping’ baked freshly every morning. These are tasty filled with the barbecue.

Best thing is that it's all you can eat.

Family and I enjoyed our meals. Have been to others around NZ and compared to these, I had to give this one 4 stars. The food is cooked with the help of sticks which cooks fine. But because the hot plate isn't fully cleaned after, you will end up with food that maybe is not entirely yours. The options were not as vast as in Auckland equivalents but again, was enjoyable enough to eat.
You can pick your own food so you can't really go wrong there. It was nice, maybe slightly overpriced but it's all you can eat so try to get your money's worth. This may sound silly but the bread on the table is amazing and it should be refilled for free. Although I suppose 50c a bread is no big deal. Dietary restrictions: They have a separate grill for people with dietary restrictions, they would then bring it to the table with people's names on. My celiac friends didn't have a reaction so clearly the grill was safe for them.
First time eating in Genghis Khan and quite satisfied with the restaurant. Quick and nice service. Owner was very friendly and lovely. The cook will still cook your food even if it’s almost closing time. The bread was delicious.
We went as a big family group of 14 12 adults, 2kids. Upon arrival the outside did not look good, but once inside it improved a bit. Seating was awkward as we were all jammed togeather at the tables we booked. Food was good, it would be nice if there was more options. Unfortunately the children present were not really able to eat there food as the person before thems food had had chilli etc on it and it was still on the plate when our kids was cooked, after that they did not want to eat it so we had to order off the menu.
Worst we have ever been to. High chair was not safe at all. Unlike all others we have been to sides ect are all extra cost. Meat was all frozen not fresh. Would never go back or recommend. Kid-friendliness: No safe place for a toddler. High chair had no way to secure in and tray was easily moved by child.
In my opinion, I think they might add more choices on food. And I was misunderstood that the desert is unlimited, which included into 6hr bbq package However, the environment was nice and the bread starter taste good You guys can try it. Different people have different perceptions
Different way of eating I enjoyed the experience but my partner did not They were helpful with her gluten free though I would say go give it a try Food: 5/5
Staff were lovely but food was really subpar. Small selection of vegetables and all the meat was freeze-dried. Would not recommend. Vegetarian options: No vegetarian options in the buffet - just meat and vegetables.
It's a lot of fun and a challenge to make your own food. Following the sauce options and not trying to put everything into the bowl helps.
Hasn't changed ever food ok very very busy with a young crowd good value with an all you can eat price
