First time that I have eaten here, definitely not my last !!nGreat Vegan choices at good prices. Nice serving sizes.nI had Vegan Gyros, Thai salad and fries with vegan mayo.nAbsolutely delicious.nWe even got our bill discounted
I have had lunch here on a weekday, and dinner on a Friday night but early. Both times I enjoyed the plant-based food and the atmosphere of the place. For dinner I had the fajita tofu bowl pictured - I cannot rant enough about how good and perfectly cooked their tofu is. Verrae nice: crunchy crust and not soggy. Both times I enjoyed having quite a few options to choose my meal from, and how fresh the ingredients are. It’s also handy that this restaurant is right on the beach, and handy for parking and the bus stops. Staff have been very responsive and helpful both times, so 5 stars it is! Will be back to try the other menu options.
One of the things we most admire about New Zealand is its incredible natural diversity — a rich flora, full of properties and abundance. We are people who truly love botany, and that’s why we had high expectations when visiting The Botanist. From its name, evoking nature, freshness, and plant-based life, we imagined a welcoming space full of greenery, offering food made with fresh, natural, and real ingredients. A place where the name and the concept would align with the overall experience.nnHowever, upon arrival, those expectations began to fade. Yes, there is decorative flora, but many of the plants were clearly neglected and dry, creating an atmosphere that felt more dull than inviting. The space didn’t reflect the vibrant, conscious feeling one would expect from a place called The Botanist.nnAs for the food, we ordered a burger, hoping for a creative, plant-based option that was far from processed. But the reality was different: the burger had just a single slice of tomato and a nearly invisible piece of lettuce. The rest was a processed meat substitute, with very little presence of fresh or real vegetables. For a restaurant with such a name, it was disappointing that the culinary offering didn’t reflect a diet rooted in authentic edible flora, but rather industrial substitutes.nnIt’s clear that the name works well as a marketing strategy — the place has good attendance, and the staff was extremely kind and attentive at all times. On that front, we have no complaints. But we felt there was a lack of coherence between what the name suggests and what is actually offered.nnThis review isn’t meant to discredit, but rather to invite reflection: The Botanist has the potential to be a truly botanical place, one that celebrates freshness, flora, ecosystems, and conscious eating. But today, that essence feels more like an image than a reality.
Excellent vegetarian brunch in the Botanist. Only came because ParrotDog was closed! But I really enjoyed the vegan sausage roll washed down by a glass of ParrotDog. Win, win. Yards from the beach. Great location and dog friendly.
Extremely delicious and everything was vegan breakfast menu is not as they serve eggs, but the dinner menu was fully vegan!. Good mix of classic and creative dishes - we had poutine as a starter, followed by gyros and a katsu chicken burger. Yum! Good home made ice tea as well and reasonably priced. Would go again!
