Story

We are a specialist shop dealing in mountain bike, downhill and xc, road, track and bmx bicycles. Opened in 2001, the shop has since been serving cyclists nationwide. We have a full Shimano service center, operated by trained mechanics with over 25 years experience.

We were looked after by a gentleman called Doug who went over and above . After giving us gold card +5%=15% off of accessories . We bought 2 Black City bikes , which are mainly red . Doug then helped us set up our bike carrier from where we had already had installed by another provider. All up 45 minutes of Doug's time .

Doug owner of the Bike Shed Whanganui is an absolute legend! From talking us through running repairs by phone at the top of the Timber Trail to slotting our four bikes seamlessly into the servicing schedule, expertly fixing all our faults in incredibly fast time and all with a great smile and nothing’s a bother attitude we highly highly recommend the Bike Shed Whanganui to all especially TA rides! We are two crazy Danes on a tour round Newzealand and have had trouble with a front basket on one of our bikes for some time. The bracket kept breaking. We went into Bike Shed, and they didn’t have a new bracket, but found another bracket and helped us mount it, all with no charge. It is just awesome to meet guys that are so helpful, and are doing their utmost to help a passing tourist!
I poped into The Bike Shed to see if they had a C spanner so I could adjust the rear shocks on my Harley. Doug the the owner was kind enough to sell me one of there tools from the workshop. This is what I call real customer service so if you have any bike needs or advice visit The Bike Shed Thanks Doug
Everything a local bike shop should be, patient, persistent and understanding. These guys are where its at. Had the best experience with Doug fixing my bike in the middle of the Tour Aotearoa at short notice. Legend.
While touring NZ on a heavily laden bike my rear rim started to crack. We pitched up in Bike Shed and received excellent, friendly service at a very reasonable price for the replacement rim and wheel rebuild I have a Rolhoff hub so replacement wheel eas not an option. Based on this experience I would wholeheartedly recommend thrm!
My husband took his wheel in to get the spokes straightened and a new tyre put on. The owner, for his own reasons, put on the wrong sized tyre, instead of just replacing the worn one with a new one of the same size. He arrogantly justified this with his specifications book, stating that my husbands bike took that size tyre. Aggravatingly for us, it was at least 5mm too big and would not fit the bike. Just because a bike catalogue says a bike takes certain parts, does not mean a 'modified' bike does. Any work done to a bike that has been 'modified' should be kept to those modifications unless agreement with bike 'owner' has been consulted, which he was not. When I had to return the wheel to get the right sized tyre put on, I was treated like I was an idiot, and in the wrong. He said we were obviously doing something wrong and he told me to bring the whole bike into the shop and he would put the wheel in for us, he said it would only take him two minutes. The next week, I took the whole bike in as he suggested. He saw that the wheel, with the tyre on it, would not fit the bike. He again, arrogantly informed me that the tyre was the right specification for the bike and that the derailer was bent. Of course the derailer was bent, we tried to put the 'fixed' wheel onto the bike. He told me to give him ten minutes. I walked out and returned fifteen minutes later. He still arrogantly told me the tyre he originally put onto the bike was the right specification for the bike. However, he then put a smaller sized tyre on despite his previous claims. I asked him where the original worn tyre was, to which he replied it had been thrown out weeks previously. Funnily enough, we had only dropped the wheel in the week prior so his statement was false. When I pointed this out, he arrogantly denied this. I told him I did not want to have to come back again to get the tyre size we actually wanted put onto the wheel. I wasted 30 minutes of my time to try to get him to fix his mistake. Customers are what keeps a business like this 'in business'. Treating customers in a condescending way and straight out lying to them is not the way to stay in business. I will not be using this business in the future and I urge others to be wary.
These guys are knowledgeable and friendly. Took my e-bike in for a service and got a mirror and a bike seat that fits my butt...no more bruising from my old narrow seat.
Very helpful, even when it's just a query, and you're not necessarily a paying customer. Yet.
