The Backbencher is one of the few remaining Wellington institutions. We sell good food and great NZ wine & beer, including 2 local crafty's. So if your catching up with friends, taking the family out for dinner or looking for a place to have a quiet few beers come on in and say hello!

Nice place, friendly staff, we had the journos platter and was enough to eat for the three of us and all nice and tasty. My 3 stars represents that I’d never return, the lack of a premium draft lager meant there was no draft for me to drink and I don’t like hoppy beers and macs gold and Steinlager are not my cup of tea.
Was nothing Special. Food was OK, atmosphere good, the political satire on wall fun. A bit chaotic the day we went but food and drinks came fast.
Such an awesome place to dine. Thanks to the waiting staff, who ensured our meals were sorted so we could get back to work. Lovely friendly team. A great Wellington institution.
Amazing fun decor.Beautiful well cooked food and well priced.I had the pork belly which had a particularly good rhubarb relish.The steak was generously sized and came with heaps of veges.The chocolate dessert balanced with vanilla gelato and tangy berries was the perfect finish.I am absolutely going back when next in Wellington.
Food was extremely expensive for a small serving and with the meat being extremely bland as well. Will not return, all this pub has going for it is its gimmick about Parliament. If you are looking to improve, do not eliminate the natural flavour of the meat, enhance it.
Courteous staff. Always quirky and interesting.
above average food quality & service. that's why we have been there twice in last 3 - 4 months. also the Parliament is just cross road. it is very nice to have an relax walk after meal when weather is OK.
The good was ok. It was easy to find parking.
