Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery

About

Te Uru is West Auckland's regional gallery, operating from award-winning new facilities in Titirangi, with core operational funding from Auckland Council.

Story

Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery is West Auckland's regional gallery. Te Uru is an institution locally rooted in West Auckland but globally minded. We have a distinctive West Auckland focus but a national and international perspective. Through our programmes, we create a world stage for art that is relevant to West Aucklanders, to put local art, artists and ideas in conversation and context with national and international developments in contemporary practice. We present a diverse programme of contemporary exhibitions, events and activities, including art, craft and design, to reflect and strengthen the full diversity of cultural identities, interests and potential of our community.

As a destination gallery, Te Uru operates from an award-winning, building in the recently re-opened Lopdell Precinct. The gallery originally opened in 1986 as the Waitemata City Arts and Cultural Centre, later known as Lopdell House Gallery, sited in the historic Lopdell House building in the heart of Titirangi, gateway to the Waitakere rain forest and en route to Auckland's famous west coast beaches. We reopened as Te Uru on Saturday 1 November 2014 in our new purpose-built facilities, offering extraordinary exhibitions and spectacular views of the surrounding area.

Our name, Te Uru, makes reference to Te Hau a Uru, the wind that blows from the west, a powerful characteristic of the region and an important story for local iwi, Te Kawerau ā Maki, who have bestowed us with this new kaupapa. The west wind shares the messages and vision of the people that live in the west, brings change, sets direction and influences Auckland City from its mountainous perch atop the Great Forest of Tiriwa. Te Uru will be a source of information and ideas that will project across the region - a fitting framework for a contemporary gallery.

This is a world class facility. The building is worth visiting irrespective of what is on display. They don't have a permanent collection so it changes constantly but they do have some really fabulous offerings.
Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery is an absolute gem! This is the place to come to if you want to experience new and contemporary art. They change their exhibits and installations often, to make every visit fresh and interesting. Your personal taste will inform the visit. Some contemporary installation are brilliantly inspired and inspiring, and showcases local New Zealand history and artists. Although I could appreciate the passion and effort that went into creating those works of art, I just didn't "get" some of the pieces. The building itself is an architectural marvel. It also offers beautiful outside views, displaying the wooded areas and the harbour as art itself. Well worth a visit!
I am in love! This gallery is spacious, 5 leveled and filled with stunning, engaging art. There is even a rooftop terrace to take beautiful, scenic photos and take a moment to admire the nature around you.
Te Uru is a wonderful contemporary art gallery. Highest recommendation. This is the place to come to in order to experience exciting new art. The building is a brilliant example of Judy Stout and David Mitchell's architecture. Here's some close up photos of the architecture's careful detailing. Wonderful staff.
Although it’s a small art gallery, it offers a variety of art pieces on display. The art building itself has interesting history.
What a great exhibition space! Highly recommend just going in to look out the windows at the view. But the exhibitions are high quality too. Plenty of parking on the street
was enslaved to multiple trips here, titirangi primary trips to here were horrible, to the lady who lives on the end of my driveway, I know you work here. there are no rules to art, so SILENCE!
Gem of a place. Content and building worth a visit. Like Auckland's contemporary art gallery the views to the outside are really something.... trees fantastic.
Superb building showing both local and national artists. Elizabeth Thompson's exquisite moths and Tia Ranginui's photographs are stand outs! Plus there's a cafe next door where you can sit by the window with a beer and watch the world go by.
Beautiful gallery and great staff. Had a great experience here with their latest exhibition. Kids loved the sand
