Story

Te Rewa Rewa Bridge is a pedestrian and cycleway bridge across the Waiwhakaiho River at New Plymouth in New Zealand. Its spectacular shape and setting make it a popular landmark.Location and historyThe bridge is part of the northern extension to the Coastal Walkway, connecting New Plymouth with Bell Block. The extension was made possible by a special agreement between Ngāti Tawhirikura hapū and the New Plymouth District Council. A historic pā is located on the north river bank and this was the site of a battle during the Musket Wars; the site is a burial ground (Rewa Rewa). The bridge is located in a semi-rural area.Design and ConstructionThe bridge was commissioned by New Plymouth District Council and designed and constructed by a consortium of Whitaker Civil Engineering, Novare Design Ltd, Apex Consultants Ltd (now Spiire) and Fitzroy Engineering. The bridge was funded by New Plymouth District Council and the Whitaker family.Bridge DesignThe designer, Peter Mulqueen, is quoted as saying he understood that the bridge should "touch lightly" on the Rewa Rewa side of the river, in order to honour the deceased. This ruled out heavier designs like cable stays and angular truss structures. Mulqueen wanted to achieve a bridge with a "harmonious and dignified character".With the ribs yielding to the prevailing wind, the bridge is aligned to Mount Taranaki. The sacred mountain is framed within the skewed arch when viewed while leaving the sacred ground – promising what is eternal.

Beautiful piece of architecture and so well placed. A real engineering success and a place you must visit to fully appreciate. Absolutely loved it.
Beautiful place to go go for a walk, over the bridge, through the track and onto the beach. Fabulous on a good day.
Nice park and walkways for walking and biking. It's a good vantage point to see Mt Taranaki on a clear day
Beautiful landmark, especially when the weather is better, you can see the Mt Taranaki. It's my second time, the first one was with my walking buddies and this second time was with my husband and daughter, but the weather didn't permit us to see the Mount. Otherwise, it's still cool.
This is a gorgeous spot. Best to go on a calm day, especially when the mountain is clear. Unfortunately we didn't get the view and it was terribly windy.
Great on a clear sunny day when the mountain is visible. Perfect spot to take photos.
Lovely bridge with smart architecture. Would suggest people to hire electric bikes or cycles when visiting this place. Also, good for camping around the area.
Currently the bridge is for repainting. We were not able to maximise our photo op as there were scaffolding and other wires in one end of the bridge. Lots of area to walk or bike. There's a nearby area where you can kayak or use a board.
A really interesting bit of engineering to add a great point of interest to the amazing coastal walkway. New Plymouth is such a great little city.
