I've traveled far and wide in NZ, and I can confidently say that Te Hikoi is one of the best regional museums. I can tell the museum curators and the locals of Aparima Riverton care about their history and heritage.nnBrent introduced me to a fascinating history. Then came the storytelling film and life-size museum dioramas, which were all made with professionalism and love. The information was well-written with the perfect amount, not too much or little. The gift shop has a massive variety of stuff, including a wide range of toys, plushies, and books.nnYou must visit this museum when in Riverton! It will give you a greater appreciation of the local area.
Staff were wonderful and very informative a great experience
What an amazing museum tucked away in Riverton at the very bottom of the South Island! The history here is as old as Aotearoa New Zealand gets, from early Maori living and foraging in the land and seascape, to the boom and bust of European sealers and whalers, and the melding of cultures. Video presentations, static displays, and local antiques, all combine to tell the story of this really interesting part of the country. Give yourselves plenty of time to absorb all that is here!
We were prompted to visit this Museum and Visitor Information Centre by a review which raved about their 15 minute film. We enjoyed it, but not at an 8.6 on IMDb level*!nnHowever Oscar-winning isn’t this short movie’s objective. Rather it’s to provide a succinct and easy to absorb overview of the early local history. Then when you view the many individual exhibits they’re that much more meaningful.nnThe welcome we received from Brent and the information he provided were excellent - ask him for anecdotes about Hillary if he’s there when you are!nnSo it’s well worth the modest ticket price of NZ$9 per adult. This includes entry and introduction movie. $5 for introduction movie only. Kids 14 and under go free.nn*Note: IMDb is a film review and ratings service and nothing to do with sound volume! A film which gets 8.6 on IMDb is truly outstanding.
This is the 2nd oldest town in NZnSteeped in fabulous history.nBeautiful scenery, beaches picnic areas, cafes, art work everywhere. Loved visiting here and will plan another trip where by I stay a while.
