This has to be one of the best museums in New Zealand. So interactive and good for a range of ages of kids and adults alike. It doesn't have a fancy big budget building but the thought and content is fantastic. Dave, the space guy knows a lot too. The VR experience included in the entry cost was cool and the kids liked earning a badge by completing challenges. Such a great stop on a road trip.
A true hidden gem. I'd put it in the top 3 small museums of NZ, as it's easy to spend a couple hours here despite the small size and even dedicated space nerds will come out having learned something new. The owner is very friendly and informative; it's easy to see that this place is a labor of love.
Stopped here with the kids to break up the trip to Taupo. Was really impressed with the whole setup, everything is super interactive so we spent about an hour and a half working our way through. Was cool to see 80's space Lego from when I was young, battle my son on the space landing to see who could use the least fuel. The VR experience was really awesome too. The kids never got bored and liked watching some of the videos from the space station on how they shave, brush their teeth and get a hair in space. There is a fair balance of info on all countries that have been to space, incl India, China and of course the Russian cosmonauts. Some cool and unique items from space travel trips incl a USSR sleeping bag. Dave is friendly and helpful, its really worth stopping and checking it out.
Dave at the Te Awamutu Space Centre has created a SPACE that has lots of informative and stimulating things to do for all ages. He shares his passion and knowledge well. I particularly liked the quiz inside and looking at The Sun through the telescope. We also left a hat behind, and he went above and beyond to return it to us. Dave is an asset to Te Awamutu and Kihikihi.
A great experience visiting the space center with kids, there's lots of good information and little games and facts about the mystery space. There is always something new to learn. With such a small entry fee to support the museum, it is easy to spend 1.5 to 2 hours there.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
This place is AMAZING.. you'd be fogiven for driving right past it and not noticing as it looks like a small village hall but this is like a TARDIS when you head inside. Space Dave is just the most passionate person about space and space exploration you are ever likely to meet in NZ, there are so many things to see and do once inside that time just seems to race by. First trip you might wonder about the cost but don't, this is the stuff of dreams and imagination.. Whether it's putting on a VR headset and traveling quite literally out of this world, a ride in a space shuttle toy, landing a lunar module or genuinely learning about some of the men and women who have adventures into space, there is something here for everyone. For the kids there is rewarded learning, they can do quizzes and coloring, word searches and join the dots to earn points towards a space cadet badge, which have pride of place at home for my kids. Try on a space suit, see the view from the ISS, watch things blow up, learn the Maori names for the planets and stars, or get excitedly taken outside to look safely at the sun as the clouds have parted.. NZ still has to have their first person in space, but I'm willing to bet when we do they will have been here as a kid and just dreamed big. All Kids big and small should go here, but be warned one visit will not be enough. And thank you Dave for all the time and effort you've put in here to make this such an awesome experience, you are already a national treasure as far as my kids are concerned, and. if you'll forgive the awful pun... For those about to rockET, we salute you.
Our visit comprised 3 generations, and we all found plenty to keep us engrossed. Space toys to entertain the littlest visitors, loads of interesting and informative displays, plenty of interactive quizzes etc and the VR display is also worth a mention - even visitors less interested in space would enjoy the experience. Highly recommendable!
Don't misjudge this centre by outside appearances. This is a "must see" attraction. Live video feeds from NASA and the space station, virtual reality trip into our solar system and hours and hours of fascinating info and displays relating to the history and current exploration of space. Did you know that when you're looking at the sunset you are not really seeing it? Find out why at the Space Centre.
Amazing collection, enjoyed chatting to the owner, you have a truely amazing hobby. I was in a few months ago now, just remembered to leave a review. WORTH EVERY CENT!
Would recommend the Te Awamutu Space Museum. We came here on our way back from the Ruapehu and we ended up spending so much time here that we got stuck in peak traffic in Auckland! Worth it though, the curator is very knowledgeable and we especially loved the LEGOs exhibit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
