A very relaxing and interesting experience. The boat ride was very good and they explained some local history and features.nOur guide for the caves had a great sense of humor and was really good at explaining the cave structure and how the glow worms live.nIt was nice to get a hot cup of tea at the end of the tour and the presentation was very informative.nWe highly recommend doing this activity
This is a unique experience walking through limestone caves. The walkway is solid and safe. The waterfalls and torrents in the caves are impressive. And then there's the glow worms by the thousands as you guide gently steers your boat underneath them al in pitch darkness. Photos are not allowed but here is one on the way in. The trip to and from the caves on Lake Te Anau was beautiful the day I went.
These caves are a culturally and ecologically important system of limestone caves on the western shore of Lake Te Anau, in the southwest of New Zealand. It is a major tourist attraction for the area, as the part of the caverns close to the lake shore is home to glow worms. No one is allowed to take photos inside the caves where the glow worms live for personal safety reasons. Very popular place, lots of tourists and locals. We boarded the boat at Te Anau that took us across to the caves about 30 minutes away. Fee charged for the trip and entry. Uneven terrain, lot of walking. Inside the caves, head clearances are unpredictable and hence you have to be careful especially as it dark in the caves. The guides use torches but its use is minimal. Part of the journey inside involves travel on small boats that are pulled along a fixed route. The glow worms are amazing to see and it is a wonder of nature. Pity that photography is not allowed.
Another amazing experience on the South Island! A short cruise with commentary about Te Anau brought us the cave. Following a short walk, there's a boat ride within the pitch black cave where you see the glowworms! Photos aren't allowed in the caves but trust me, it's an awesome sight!
This was an amazing tour. Some tips for others. Put on insect repellent before you go. The boat to Cavern House was good. We had a small briefing in the house and then went in groups of 12 into the cave. Do not take a bag - leave in Cavern House if you've brought one. You start by walking on a metal path in the cave, see a waterfall in the cave and then you get on a small boat in the dark inside the cave bags are annoying here. There is no opportunity inside the cave to stop and get things from your bag. You go on a small boat ride they pull it along a chain and see the glow worms.nPeople see them different colours, which I didn't know until after - so take note! I only saw them as green. You return to cavern house for a hot chocolate, tea or coffee and a short explanation about the worms before returning on the cruise. You can't take photos inside the cave. Download some from the Internet after, for the memories.
