I have really enjoyed TAS. As an area school it’s provided my boys with a relaxed environment to transition from day care into primary school. Their play based learning has really made that transition smooth. There are lots of opportunities for our children to participate in sports days, country days, camps, speech competitions, music lessons, daily swimming in summer and many more. It’s one of the few schools that send kids on camp from the first year and my boys have thoroughly enjoyed that opportunity. Our children can try out a variety of sports, arts, and academic competition without even leaving the school grounds sometimes – and they are encouraged to do so by their wonderful teaching staff. There are so many opportunities at TAS for the children, they just need to join in. I have found the school has a wonderful community and enriching feel about it. TAS is a safe rural school that offers our boys a variety of opportunities. They have excelled under the guidance of their teachers who have been open to regular discussions and advice on supporting them in their learning. These teachers are constantly using new and interesting ways to help our children read and write and learn in ways that are the best for them. For us personally it is nice to know our children are safe when they are at school and away from the added distractions of town or city life when they enter high school. The school grounds are also tidy and they have a pool and trees which makes for a nice environment. While we have not had major issues at school, we have had a couple of occasions where we have needed to either address concerns with teachers or other children. On every occasion I have found the staff that I have had to deal with helpful and reasonable within the guidelines they have to follow. Their concern has always been for the children’s wellbeing in my experience. Parent – Carine.
From my experience, Tauraroa Area School was a wonderful chapter in my life. I built strong relations with the students, and eventually went on to do the same with the staff after gaining their respect. This school has tremendous potential for young kids who are out there that lack stability in the education setting from much larger, expansive schools. If those kids manage to find a group anywhere near what I had during my tenure, it would be invaluable for them in their development. So long as you treat the staff with respect, this school offers another angle through which one can view education. Rather than the teachers being cold and isolated, as they would be in larger schools with more people, you can easily form a sense of community within the school premises. All in all, your experience with this school will be proportional to how much respect you bestow on people, and the students you surround yourself by. For me, this school has a special place in my heart. Long may similar experiences continue.
This school changed my outlook on education- really encouraged me to do well and pushed me to my limits in the best way possible. The community here is amazing and the senior teachers and staff are so lovely. Going to miss but cherish all the memories made here !! Highly recommend sending your kids here.
The Principal has delusions of grandeur, he refuses to acknowledge when he is wrong and does little work contributing to student wellbeing and education. To be honest all I ever see him doing is taking photos and patrolling the school for litter bugs! He was often away during school assembly and when he was there - every single time - he failed to correctly pronounce basic Maori words and phrases. My friend was listening to positive rap music that contained no offensive or rude language, it actually helps motivate him. It was on a speaker which is allowed at the school but he called it a "Ghetto Speaker", there was no need to offend the student or to even interact with him? Wasn't loud or upsetting. A girl was called racist names by the Head-Boy at the school, the Principal ignored it until the Head-Boy student started to be harassed, then gave out a verbal warning to the Head-Boy. Isn't a Head-Boy/Girl supposed to be a positive role model? Why not take away the title of "Head-Boy" from that student? The school has been in the media many times, just Google "Tauraroa Area School NZHearld" from cameras being placed in changing rooms to students having a boating experience at a school trip where they were trapped in a Cave for 2 hours... Outdated view on education, needs to adapt to the 21st Century!
this school made me want to off my self, teachers don’t care about the students. I was crying in the year 13 room once during study period and the graphics teacher kept asking me why i wasn’t studying and he wasn’t even my teacher so i just left. does not care about mental health at all
I have caught many people vaping in the bathroom me and my friend made up this game called how many vapers are in the bathroom but my friend always loses because he always under estimates the amount of vapers in the bathroom. Overall mid school 5 outta five the game was entertaining
Teachers lack patience. If you're struggling to understand something they tend to get frustrated with you. Due to that and being Autistic I ended up just dropping out at 15 without NCEA Level 1. I couldn't keep up with normal students and teaching methods that work for them don't work for me.
Do not recommend. There's a lot of gang affiliated students at the school not in gangs but have gang member parents/brothers/cousins. I was asked twice to become a prospect for two different gangs by students at the school. Some of the teachers are a bit "Power Hungry" and overuse their authority e.g. you're a minute or two late to class because you didn't hear the bell -the bell at TAS is very quiet and hard to hear- so they put it on your pastel record, making it a lot harder to pass a job interview.
Poorly run school wouldn't send my kids back there in a million years. Teaching young children the wrong stuff about sex and suicide completely unacceptable
Terrible school, Staff wont act untill a student is pushed to the point of depresion, the only staff member more useless then the principal and his ignorant wife is the P.E Teacher Mr Peatree
