Story

All About Taste Nature's History

Taste Nature has a well-established reputation as ‘the organic shop’ in Dunedin. Despite major challenges over the years, Taste Nature has survived through the commitment of many dedicated people who have maintained the availability of a secure supply of certified organic food to the Otago community.

The shop was initially started in 1992 managed by Jim O'Gorman (aka Dirt Doctor) and traded as Silverpeaks Bay Products Ltd initially from Jim's garage and latterly from an old church in Dundas St and two locations in Lower Moray Place.

In 1995 the business became a Consumer Cooperative and Taste Nature Ltd was formed. At this time it moved to new premises at 59 Upper Moray Place. The shop benefited from a period of stability and steady growth until in 2003, it could be sold as an unencumbered, viable enterprise, and the Cooperative be wound up. John Gadd and Helen Davidson were involved in the day to day running and management of the shop throughout this period.

In 2001 Mark Dickson, a member of the consumer group and a small-scale grower in Waitati, became involved in Taste Nature as Assistant Manager. In 2003, he and Rayna were invited to purchase the business, which they did, forming Taste Nature (2003) Ltd. The loyal growers, suppliers and customers provided Taste Nature with a strong base from which the business could continue to grow.

2009 brought another change. Taste Nature moved from Moray Place to its present location in larger and brighter premises in the Bing Harris building in lower High St. This move enabled the development of a full kitchen and small delicatessen and the expansion of the gardening section. The range of stock was expanded at that time.

Mark and Rayna live in the heart of Waitati and grow produce for Taste Nature on their hectare of land with Jason Ross - Habitate Nursery. Taste Nature continues to support a wide range of activities related to sustainability in the local community.

Taste Nature's objectives are to:

Supply certified organically produced staple food to a cross-section of the Otago community

Trade fairly

Support local growers of organically produced food

Promote self sufficiency and sustainability in the local community

Provide information to consumers about growing and preparing organically produced food

Reduce, reuse, repair and recycle and use non-polluting products throughout our operation

Run a commercially viable business.

Pretty nice shop but I wish the online shopping option was better. I don’t like how it’s category and then brand, I wish it just listed all the products available by type or had different filter options to make shopping more stream lined. Also I notice that you can’t buy any dried beans or pulses online, they don’t even mention that they offer them. Would be awesome if they put more work into the online shopping experience- I would definitely shop there regularly if they did but it’s easier for me to order dried legumes from elsewhere at the moment.
Love coming back to this place again and again. If there is a business with a heart then this is surely the one. Organic offerings at its best. Super helpful staff, chefs pouring not just ingredients but also pure love and compassion in the meals. Every meal offered has several small organic components tastefully matched with condiments and garnishes. Coffee with multiple options of milk, still super yum. Fresh organic seasonal produce, spices, ready to eat food products and everything you need for your kitchen and household. All top notch, all fresh. Pride of our town. Another visit today to buy some produce for Xmas cooking. Fresh high quality organic produce impeccably set store and helpful staff. Ended up picking this vegetable roulade as a take away. These guys know how to use fresh organic produce to make delicious treats. The roulade had 7 vegetables tamari roasted seeds and a yummy dressing. Loved it. Thanks team
I love shopping at Taste Nature. The staff are always friendly and very helpful. Offering suggestions when needed. I got some Canterbury stone milled flour that I use to keep my sour dough starter going. I also bought some OCHO spiced drinking chocolate. They have beautiful vegetables. There was two types of garlic to choose from.
Just the best poached eggs and mushrooms in the southern hemisphere. Top effort guys.
Gluten free food is excellent. Clean. Love that you can see through to the kitchen. Parking is a nightmare outside. Shop area is expensive.
Such a beautiful cafe and shop. Stocked up on my favourite earl grey tea while here.
Taste Nature is my go-to place to put a smile on my face. You can’t beat their customer service, large range and delicious food.
Love range of foods with local items that I won't find elsewhere. Absolutely love the seaweed collection. Beautiful shelfing and arrangement of all the stock.
Wonderfully rustic, busy, funky setting for vegetarian food and stunning coffee.
Truly started my day with magic here this morning! Wonderful friendly and Uber helpful kitchen staff and the most amazing pesto-avocado pastry that the chef had specially made that morning - DIVINE! Perfect plunger coffee and such positive ambience and conversations while I sat and planned my day. ThankYOU Taste Nature! I’ll be regular now for sure xx
