Absolutely tremendous place! Unbelievably beautiful localization. Amazing beach with sea lions. Esther is a dream host! I especially appreciated the comfortable lounge and the conservatory with sea view where you can spend evenings with a book and a glass of wine on the sofa.Rooms: 5/5
Couldn't be better !! Quiet and peaceful location. Easy access to most sightseeings in the Catlins. Well maintained clean and tidy room and communal area. Lovely hosts. Even they held a party for my birthday !! Unforgettable experience~~ Many thanks, Esther and Jack !!
Fantastic place. In love with this place. Basic accomodation yet extremely recommendable only for people that have no problem with that. Very very friendly owning couple. Beach with seals and walking distance.
Great little spot! Incredibly friendly hosts, and really clean rooms which made us feel right at home. Perfect spot to go meet some Sea Lions
We booked the entire lodge for a family reunion and it was perfect. This has a retro nz batch feel. Beds are comfy great showers and spotlessly clean. Esther the owner is the perfect host. The interior is cozy with different areas to relax and the views are amazing. 5 minutes to Owaka and Surat bay is literally outside the gate. We will be back.
Great Hostel. Very clean and cozy. Esta really makes you feel at home, very sweet lady!Rooms: 5/5
Stayed here with my wife back in November 2018 for one night. The location of the hostel is amazing! just outside the hostel there is this virgin beach. and above all the whole area is pitch dark so you can see stars everywhere. the kitchen was very equipped to make any meal you wanted. the overall feeling of the place was very cozy. Cheers!
Our family has just spent 3 nights at Surat Bay Lodge - Excellent for our needs. We entirely booked it out - was a great venue for our extended family get together. Very clean and well equipped, not palatial but very comfortably quaint, warm and homely and a great location. Jack and Ester were so welcoming and accommodating. We strongly recommend Surat Bay Lodge for old-school Kiwi style comfort and hospitality.
What a great hostel! We truly enjoyed our 5 days stay. It's clean, the staff was friendly and very helpful. And the owners Jack and Esther are passionate about the hostel and really want your stay to be enjoyable. The one downside... the bunk beds have the worst mattresses ever. The location is perfect! Right next to the beach which you have to share with sea lions. We saw one everyday, sitting on his favourite spot. The family room has a beautiful view, but room number 1 has the best view. The common area is inviting to get to know fellow travellers better. There's a Foursquare in Owaka, close by. And a New World in Balclutha, 30 minutes away.
Great place would recommend this place to stay at for anyone. The owners are so helpful, kind and a pleasure to meet. They also make the best coffee at the very quaint coffee cart.
