Summerlands

About

Summerlands is a magical place a momentary utopia that exists as a dream on the outskirts of your imagination.

Story

A land where time bends and space expands along with the pulse of music. A place where experience and connection become the local currencies. A land where you will feel right at home and yet be taken to another world. A place called 'Summerlands'.

On the 2nd of January the mirage will become real as ‘Summerlands’ settles upon the sacred shores of Lake Hawea. For one day a utopia of music, motion and celebration will unfold under the sun and night skies of beautiful Central Otago. Artists and creators who have traveled the seas from far-away lands will converge at this one place to share the wares of their soul. At this time and in this place we will escape the world we know and exist in a land of summer.

Some good, some bad. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice, even though they were busy. The lack of menu cards and food options raised our eyebrows a bit but wasn't really a bother. However, the prices vs the quality we received did not see eye to eye. I had their special Sunday roast and was utterly disappointed. The beef and pork were not seasoned. The beef was undercooked and tough, even though it was very thinly sliced. The rest of our table had fish and chips. The chips were great but the fish tasted like those frozen fish boxes in the supermarket. The dessert was what made this review a 3, instead of a 2. The best date pudding I've ever had, which went great with the butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream. The candied ring was a very nice touch as well. We might come back for dessert but not for the food I'm afraid.
We loved staying here. The outside is pretty old but the room was spacious and perfect for our family of 6 and the views just topped it off. Absolutely stunning. The lady's at the reception were wonderful and we very grateful for being told about being careful on our drive back due to some accidents on the road. We will definitely be back.
Had dinner at the Hawea hotel We ordered the calamari, then mains were venison and the pork belly. Absolutely delicious! We were really impressed with the great quality and taste and also great service Would highly recommend for dinner. We booked to ensure we’d get a table
A lovely spot for a nice lunch! The staff were absolutely brilliant and super helpful, and the food was incredible. I got the venison and I almost liked the plate clean! Nice view over the lake too, would definitely recommend for a nice outing
Amazing view from both the hotel room and the restaurant. The staff are nice and the food in the restaurant are great! The hotel is in a superb location and makes it a great choice for someone that loves to explore the area or a sleepover before or after heading to Fox Glacier
Very expensive for what we got. The kids meals are only suitable for age 6 or less not up to 13 as the menu suggests. The burgers were tiny and chip portion too small. It took almost an hour to get our meal. We left feeling unsatisfied. And won’t go back anytime soon. A pity because we have enjoyed this place for years. Clearly, they have raised the prices and reduced the quality.
My partner and I was absolutely shocked with the experience. From the poor service to the stupidity long waits. Waiting at reception, the wait to order and receive food and that was just lunch in the restaurant. The fridge was so old in the room barely kept anything cold. The milk was a little glass jar with clean film, who would trust that. We needed to clean the kettle before use. Holes in the carpet. Black Underwear in the grass off the back deck. Cigarette butts in ashtray after booking as family with 2yo toddler. Then the rude, narrow minded, racist behavior our friends received when the rooms they booked were given away to others. Telling them "you can leave now if you want" and "go find accommodation elsewhere" in such condescending and cure manner making a couple of them get upset they had been traveling half the day and have 4 kids under 4 with them. As a born and breed kiwi boy from the coromandel Peninsula the treatment my friends received made me embarrassed to be a kiwi. Absolutely disgusting Hawea Hotel and the tall older guy from reception good on ya way to kill a business.
Waited 1 hour and 30 minutes for one order of fries, still currently waiting. The lady that ordered right before me asked how long the food would take and the man replied less than 30 minutes since she was the 3rd order in line, making me the fourth.. I could have been in Queenstown by now. It's a nice place but unless you have time to waste, don't come here *update* I ended up going to the bar to ask for a refund for the fries I never received, the man who runs the place did not apologise but instead BLAMED ME for not receiving them. Saying I should have said something earlier. The guy doesn't really give off an approachable vibe... I honestly feel so bad for the people that work with him. He's the kind of person who is never wrong.. I think we all know a few like this.. Anyway. I would definitely avoid this place.
Top choice for food and drinks when we are in our favourite corner of the country. During the busy New Year rush there were 1 + hour wait times on food, Luke and the team somehow managed to get our food out within 15 minutes of ordering. Legends.
Beautiful view from our room. Carpet very worn and place was in need of a spruce up. But the view outdated the negative. Didn't dine, only accommodation.
