Stonehenge Aotearoa
"New Zealand’s only open air astronomical observatory welcomes you to explore the Universe and rediscover the knowledge of our ancestors. Come visit us for a tour.Stonehenge Aotearoa was created out of a course that Astronomer Richard Hall and Educator Kay Leather taught, called "Mysteries of the Night Sky". Richard and Kay wanted a practical open-sky observatory inspired by, and built on a similar scale, to the famous Stonehenge in England. Stonehenge was built with a grant from MORST administered by the Royal Society and opened by Nobel Laureate and Mastertonian Professor Alan MacDiarmid in February 2005."

An educational and immersing experience. Was able to learn about the origin and importance of Stonehenge together with the Zodiac signs. The building itself is quite mystical. Good thing we visited when it was not busy as I am not much of a sociable person and I dislike the crowd.
What a wonderful place! The spiel & vibe as you enter this scientific folly is so calming & fun. It's so clever & beautiful & the countryside setting is awe inspiring. Would love to do a night tour or sound experience given the chance. Highly recommend
We were staying in the area and were researching for attractions to visit. Really glad to have come across this place. Upon arrival, you watch a short 15-minute looping video that explains the origins of the henge and those involved with building it with such precision. Make sure you stand on the floor circle and clap or make a suitable noise. It was well worth the entry fee. I would recommend visiting anyone able to.
It would be interesting if you were really into this type of thing. It probably would be better on a sunny day so you can see shadows from the sun. At $15 a head, it is a little costly for someone like me who is not a buff but I do understand that a lot of expense would have gone into creating the Stonehenge itself.
What an amazing piece of astrological magic this is. It is breathtaking. We managed to get our large motorhome up the drive without hassle. The friendly lady at reception even allowed us to take our small dog with, thank you for being so thoughtful.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Wow! An amazing experience! This was our first visit as a family of 4. Two adults, 2 children. The little information hut is where you purchase your tickets, and the lovely man knows all about stone henge. It’s worth going through to the beautiful auditorium and watching the brief video on all things sun, stars, astrology, what the stone henge is for. Then you follow your map to the amazing structure itself. Breathtaking it was! We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves thank you very much!!

Did the night safari, unfortunately it was cloudy, but still interesting. The henge is pretty impressive. But, it's not very accessible, as we all had to stand outside for two hours, and it was very hard to concentrate by that stage. Chairs are absolutely needed for the outside portion, especially if there is no stargazing due to the weather. The outside talks could have been much shorter, and the indoor parts much longer. Definitely didn't need so much time, if there are no stars to see. I think it's perfectly acceptable to shorten it when it's cloudy. It was still a very interesting talk, and worth the visit for sure. Very big group, so the Mars exhibition small, but interesting, was quite overcrowded. Hari was very engaging and passionate.
A very unique attraction in New Zealand. A modern reproduction of the British Stonehenge. It will set you back $15 a head to have a look around. Do check out the audio visual presentation before heading into the magic circle.
The Stonehenge Aotearoa is not a replica of Stonehenge of UK but it is ongoing construction of site to study and understand the stars and it's constellation. The couple who runs this place are the scientist who has more than 4 decades of experience of this place. Just don't go there for taking pictures and watching the short film but interact with them and you'll learn more about this. There is a entry fee of 10 dollars each though.
