A wonderful place to visit and enjoy a bit of learning. As a visitor from the northern hemisphere it's exciting to learn about the stars we never get to see. Wonderfully curated and easy to navigate, add in that the park surrounding the building really allows you to soak in what you've just experienced and really appreciate the speck of dust we inhabit.
It's a very pleasant and nice place, the video was very beautiful and informative. I was pleasantly impressed with the meteorites display in the gallery. The videoprojector could use a better resolution tho, it's a bit blurry. Wasn't able to test the telescope as it's still worked on. This place needs an higher funding, there's so much potential, the spirit is there, the foundations are outstanding, but it needs money to be really fantastic. The lady at the store was very nice, helpful and welcoming too!
We visited with my daughter's school for a night show. The 3D movie was a fascinating way to learn about our solar system. My 4 year old son was glowing in excitement afterwards. Good displays inside the auditorium of rockets, spaceships, information about stars and the solar system. Got to see the moon through the telescopes
I was here with a few friends for The Moon Milestone Show. The staff was very friendly and approachable. I must say, the narrator of the show nailed it! It was well narrated and we were loaded with lots of information about the Apollo 11 launch on the Moon. To finish this and as an icing, we also had a look at the stars, planets - Saturn and Jupiter, the Moon and few clusters in the sky through a Telescope! The experience was just too good! The staff here was very welcoming, friendly and was answering all our questions. Some displays based on the Apollo 11 launch themes were made with LEGO! : I would highly recommend this place, especially this show and would return here for more! Cheers
It has been almost 20 years since I visited Stardome, and it lives up to my not-so-clear memory! Who doesn’t love a bit of astronomy? It’s not too hard to find films/sessions that you would enjoy. The sessions are around 50 minutes, so not too long if you have little ones. The whole show and the area inside the building is educational and quite cool! Would recommend visiting - it might be better to get tickets online before going in I’m not sure if they do ‘door’ sales. Parking can a bit tricky if it’s busy we went on Valentine’s Day so not too sure how parking is usually.
Matariki show was awesome, my daughters learned lots and had lots of fun. An hour in the dome flew by! Totally recommend as a family outingVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Great place to visit for kids and adults alike. We haven't been for a few years and the renovation that has taken place recently is excellent. Looking forward to visiting again soonVisited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
I went to the Stardome Observatory with my six year old recently on a school trip and was very disappointed in the lack of science on display. My son is prime age to encourage his learning about: in my best Carl Sagan voice the wonders of space, the vastness of the universe, the scientific method, rocket launches, space missions, critical thinking and discovery of exoplanets, but instead it was squandered on three back to back animations of Maori myths spanning 40+ minutes. Many other children wouldn't have known that these origin myths are not true and will actually think the moon can kidnap people - especially when the video is saying "when you look at the moon you can still see the Tama-rereti holding onto the tree" or something. I understand why these animations are important in New Zealand, but these stories do not belong in an observatory or any institution that says they promote science. No child that day learned anything related to space, in fact, it's likely detrimental to their understanding. It's frustrating because I went a year or so ago and had a much better experience.
The star dome Pink Floyd event was probably one of the best cinema-esque experiences I've ever had. Incredible visuals, great sound and the staff are super friendly, vedy good vedy niceVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Watching a movie was 4D experience and my knowledge of space and rockets increased very good. Plus I had some tears from the movie. It was dense experience within 50 min.
