Story

We produce the finest quality smoked salmon products New Zealand has to offer using premium New Zealand King salmon sourced from the clear, fresh ocean waters of the South Island.

It all happens in the rural setting of picturesque Hororata, New Zealand where Prime Foods New Zealand has its home. From its beginnings in 1994, the company policy has been to always offer quality and service. We strive for excellence.

The story of Prime Foods is one of new beginnings. Founder and managing director Henry Studholme turned his hand to smoked salmon in the late 1980s after a career in farming. He bought a small block on the edge of Hororata that had an empty state-of-the-art food processing factory. A friend suggested that he use the abandoned factory on the property to smoke salmon. And that's exactly what he did.

Knowing nothing about smoking salmon, he took himself to the library and read up all he could on smoking salmon.

Twenty years later the innovative company is setting the standard as the finest smoked salmon on the market. We use our own unique processing technique to bring out the flavours and textures by infusing herbs and spices in the smoking process specially developed by our own engineers.
