Booked and paid over a month earlier for 3 nights, Craig had emailed confirming he had received payment. Left after 2 nights as I had mixed up dates our loss, his gain!. We had packed up and gone across the road for coffee when he comes over and loudly accuses us of not paying!!! Told him we had in fact paid, showed him the emails and bank statement and he just walks off without even apologising! Very embarrassing to be accused of not paying in front of other people at the cafe and was not impressed he did not apologize after being corrected.
This place was a really good find in Papatowai. Craig was busy when we got there, taking care of the place, and then came to find us to give us great info on walks around, the wonderful shop across the street for food and other finds as well as the nearby Lost Gypsy Gallery. Room were very spacious, not a 5 star hotel but a 10 star motel, with all cooking gears one might want. We would definitely stay there again!
Not sure what all these bad reviews are about - We had a very pleasant experience - Craig was wonderfully helpful knowledgeable about the walks and activities to do in the Catlins. Accommodation was clean, well decorated with great atmosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you Craig!
There are quite a few accommodation options in The Catlins and I was surprised at how expensive there were for the area. I decided to book a twin room here as it was a reasonable price considering being in the middle of nowhere.nThough dated in décor, the room was very clean; spacious bathroom and kitchen area which had a hot place for self-cooking etc; the usual tea/coffee with electric jug, crockery, cutlery etc.nCraig is a very friendly man, most helpful and the Motel complex actually offers quite a number of rooms.nWe've scored a 3 but it's more like a 3.5 - almost a 4, as the beds probably need to be updated, especially the sheets as ours were quite threadbare; a couple of the coffee mugs were cracked - one even leaked water when filled; and the oil heater had rust spots all over it but it worked very well.
Visited the region from Dunedin in February. Stayed overnight. Mould on curtains and lamp shades. Rusted oil heater, rot in window sills, hot plate striker not working, stains on sheets, some utensils with broken handles. The lack of attention to detail in maintenance shows. Host advised us he had run out of milk a few days earlier, and suggested we provide our own. Would not recommend and will not be staying again.
