The hotel has very friendly staff, there is an option to rent hiking and skiing equipment, the rooms have their own bathrooms, and some basic kitchen things, such as plates, are provided in the rooms. An option of a whirlpool is also nice.nJust be careful that the views from the rooms on the pictures only applies to the rooms on the side down from the hill. The side up to the hill, such as where we had our room, faces a parking lot with facility's background.nI visited the place in December and at that time, there was no vegetable at breakfast buffet, just some canned fruit. I would have very much appreciated some veggies.nOther than that, you are close to the national park with a lot of hiking trail options around, especially if you have a car.
Located right in the middle of the national park, it’s a great spot for hiking or small trails around. We didn’t go in ski season but went to hike the Alpine Crossing and the receptionist booked a shuttle for us to go the next morning. They also recommended a good sunset spot and trails for me to run on when I asked. We stayed in the backpackers side of the skotel and we did find that there weren’t enough forks for the amount of people that were using the kitchen, not being able to find a fork or spoon to eat with sometimes. We also wished there was a ‘free food’ bin for some of our bits we wanted to give away.nThe fire alarm went off at 11pm the night before our Tongariro Crossing because a family set it off in the kitchen. The fire brigade had technical difficulties being in such a remote spot which meant it was going off till 12:30 so we all had to wait in the dining area or lobby for them to clear it till we could go to bed. The staff handled it very well we thought despite dealing with older couples and people being annoyed and snappy with them. They offered us all free hot drinks we even got a hot chocolate on request and grabbed us some playing cards from behind the bar which was great because we had left our phones in the room. Because we were up so late we were really tired but they dealt with it really well and were very apologetic when it wasn’t their fault, also not on the clock but making everyone warm drinks, handing out water and blankets. 10/10 thanks guys :nOverall we had a great stay though, all the staff were super friendly, along with there being a sauna and a hot tub, we had so much fun and everyone was super helpful. We felt really at home, the day after our hike all the people who worked there asking how it was, having all chatted to us individually before.nThanks guys :
We weren’t able to to the tongariro crossing due to bad weather, but all the more reason to be back. Loved this hotel. Cozy, situated at a good spot for outdoor activities. Everything was basic but everything you need after a day of outing. Bed was so comfortable. Staff were friendly. Ate our meals at the hotel restaurant, remember you need to book beforehand. Good selection of food, taking into account you are at mountain base, even got gluten free and kids meal. Will definitely come again when we do the hike.
This lodge is so charming. The staff are so sweet and helpful. My husband and I stayed here while visiting Tongariro, and found the location absolutely perfect for our base of operations. Amenities are basic, but exactly what you need. I wouldn’t call it fancy necessarily, but we felt comfortable and well taken care of. The hotel also has a clear commitment to sustainability, which was clear in the toiletries they offered and their set up. Beds were comfortable and the food at the restaurant was good. Pretty affordable considering it’s NZ and quite far out. I’m a vegetarian and they had different options for that and gluten-free, which was a high plus as well. There’s also a kitchen if you want to cook your own food, and coin-operated laundry as well. It’s a bit away from a sizable town, but has basics and stuff for sale behind the check in counter if you’re in a pinch. They were super helpful in helping us sort out hiking poles and shuttles to and from Tongariro when we did the hike. Would definitely recommend this to anyone planning to visit the park!
We had an overnight stay at Skotel. We arrived late afternoon. Check-in was quick enough, and details provided. We lucked out that where I parked was right next to our room. We enjoyed our time on the patio next to the bar, where the drink and food prices were reasonable given the our location. The view was spectacular.nnThe breakfast buffet was good enough. And while the Tongariro Crossing was cancelled that day due to high winds, my packed lunch I had prepurchased was good, and was plenty of food for two people and got us through some shorter day hikes and our drive down to Wellington.nnThis was a reasonably priced option and an excellent location within Tongariro National Park.
