Great place to spend some time. There’s plenty of replica buildings and even a few originals from the area. Information boards everywhere covering the history of the area. Only downside is there is a bit of a lack of shade in some places so make sure to bring a hat. There is a shop in the town street which sells ice creams and sweets which is great on a hot day. 4/5
Fabulous, well beyond expectations and worth entry cost. Spent over 4.5 hours looking at the many exhibitsVisited onWeekday
Worth a visit! Great experience seeing life as it was in the 1800s and doing a bit of gold panning and stream train riding.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Great - got talking to the lovely woman that was driving the train that day and learned a thing or two about how it works. Half a ton of coal a day is quite a lot eh? I’m the information provided about life during the gold rush is interesting- and makes you value what you’ve got these days. 10% of the population was here and drank 25% of the country’s alcohol!
Pretty awesome. Few attractions closed unfortunately. Yummy scone with jam and cream from the cafe. Truly undrinkable coffee I hate to say though I joked that I'm glad it was free. Otherwise, a lovely day out.Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

If you're looking for a unique and memorable attraction to visit in Greymouth, Shantytown is definitely worth checking out. Although the place may be a bit run down, it has a certain charm that's difficult to resist, with a fascinating glimpse into the history of the area and NZ during the gold rush era. One of the highlights of Shantytown is the steam train, which takes visitors on a scenic and memorable ride through the park. The train is a true marvel, with its old-fashioned design and the hissing of steam adding to the overall experience. The other exhibits and displays at Shantytown are equally fascinating, providing a glimpse into the lives of the early pioneers of the area. From the old-fashioned buildings to the place where you pan for gold, there's plenty to see and learn about. Overall, while Shantytown may not be a shiny and modern attraction, it has a unique and undeniable appeal that's well worth a visit. And if you have a chance to take a ride on the steam train, it's an experience you won't soon forget.
Their gold washing was fun, but the whole experience is only alright, the train ride is supposed to be a highlight but can be crowded and have poor visibility, everything else might not live up the vibe, we got bored rather quickly. I also don’t recommend booking online since it’s the same full price, yet you can easily find discount vouchers around local businesses that can get u up to 20% off.
Nicely set out, with authentic artifacts, the audio speakers weren't working but had great historical information boards to read .Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Interesting place to bring the family to see a bit of heritage and learn about gold mining. You even get to have a go at panning for goldVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
