We are a group of young people from various Asian, Middle Eastern and African backgrounds working towards a violence-free future!
OUR BACKGROUND
Migration brings with it issues related to settlement, acclimatization to new cultures, cross-cultural barriers, etc. For the youth from immigrant communities, the process of integration while having to live in a traditional environment at home and adapting to western-value based environment outside of home, is a lot harder.
In recognition of the issues presented by the youth from migrant and refugee communities, the Youth Unit of Shakti, a community organisation that has been servicing New Zealand’s migrant and refugee communities for 21 years hosted our first ever Youth Conference for young people of Asian, African and Middle descent to coincide with YOUTH WEEK. The Youth Conference, MYNZ (Migrant Youth New Zealand), was held on May 27, 2010 with the primary goal of empowering immigrant youth to talk openly about the challenges of living in New Zealand.
TODAY
Our Shakti Youth team is focused on mobilising the next generations to end family violence and gender-based oppression from an intersectional feminist perspective.
Together we can make a difference. Let our voices be heard and make Aotearoa New Zealand a super-awesome multi-culturally inclusive place for all of us! Join us today!
