We visited Serai after reading the glowing reviews and decided to wait for a Monday when they have a 20% special. Only thing to note is that VAT is not included in the menu prices unlike most places so the 20% is basically nullified. Prices were still pretty fair though. I started with the "pulled tea" which was incredibly sweet and delicious. Also, the large amount of condensed milk in it really helped cool the spice later with my meal. Highly suggested. They also had a selection of homemade teas, wine, and bottle beer. We started with the curry roti appetizer which was a piece of roti with a healthy amount of dal to dip it in. I knew the meal was going to be good because of how authentic the lentils were and the amount of spice. I love spicy foods and have been having a hard time finding anything at all spicy in Germany. The lentils and my food a 2 / 3 pepper rating, which was hot, but not what I'd call 2/3 back home were spicy enough to be tasty, but no where near what I've had at Thai before, which was actually good as it wasn't so hot as to ruin the flavor. I also had the curry soup with chicken which came in a huge ramen bowl and was filled with chicken, noodles, veggies, and delicious broth. The broth was definitely the star of the meal and I had to refrain from liking the bowl out. Again, it was spicy enough to make my nose run, but it really added to the flavor rather than becoming painful or overwhelming it. My wife had the curry chicken and rice and we ended up trying each others as well. Hers was also very good. This was also a 2 pepper rating but we both thought it was less spicy. The sauce was very good and the chicken was cooked very well. Our waitress did not speak any English, but remained friendly and we got by with our remedial German and pointing at the menu. Definitely worth a visit when you are in the mood to try something different in Heidelberg.
Sadly not as good as we'd hoped. Service is friendly and the menu is promising, but execution is rather bland. No spice both in terms of heat or flavor to speak of. Noodles were overcooked. Portions are large. Average at best.
