Went for the future of Selwyn's submission presentation today. Good to see that the district is thinking longer term. The council building have good facilities and the reception staff is very helpful. Went to the AA for a photo identification. The lady at the desk was very efficient and it took only 5 minutes. But there was a long line with people waiting for driving license related services. They need more staff and a better software process to make the service time less.
They can't maintain roads, which causes damage to vehicles, and then they hold you liable for your own car to get fixed yourself even tho you pay road users and it nearly ended in a most likely fatal crash in 100k area. I wouldn't buy in the district they can't keep up with roads but quick to make you pay rate have contacted Stuff media!!!
The customer services here today was fantastic! I needed to do two things… a new Metro card for my grandson, and renewing my drivers license. Two separate counters but all the staff were super helpful.
As a visitor to Rollerston which is a very nice place ,I must say the entrance from Hoskins Rd through the industrial area let's it down. The condition of the verges re mowing maintenance is not good at all.
I didn’t expect to spend this much of 2025 learning the finer points of local government law, but here we are. Twice now I’ve asked Selwyn District Council for something very basic: a list of procurement contracts over $50,000 excluding roading maintenance. In plain language, who’s getting the big cheques, how much, and when.nnTwice, the Council refused under section 17f of LGOIMA, which is essentially the “too hard” clause. Apparently, running a report from their finance system MagiqCloud, which they themselves promote as modern and transparent would require “substantial collation and research.” Oddly enough, other councils manage it.nnThe law actually requires them to consult with requesters before refusing, and to consider partial release or staged reporting. Selwyn did neither. They just hit copy-and-paste on 17f. Efficient at refusals, if nothing else.nnMeanwhile, rates in Selwyn are up nearly 20% for some households mine included. The Council says the “average” rise is only 14.2%. That’s the thing about averages: they look tidy on paper, but in real life somebody’s always paying more.nnAnd then there’s QV. My objection to their capital valuation increase? Delayed until January 2026. By the time it’s reviewed, I’ll have paid nearly two years of rates based on a number I’m formally disputing. It’s a bit like being told you’ll get a refund on the wrong meal after you’ve already eaten it twice.nnAll this would be frustrating enough on its own, but like many households we’re already carrying extra weight: mental health costs, hidden care burdens, and the stress of rising prices everywhere else. When councils and government agencies push costs back onto families, they’re not just balancing budgets, they’re shifting the strain onto real people’s wellbeing.nnSo here we are: invoices arrive on time, but accountability arrives late or not at all. I can be told how much more I owe this year, but not where the money’s actually going. If this is “transparency,” I may need to get my eyes checked.nnI might escalate to the Ombudsman, or maybe just take up journalism, since I seem to be doing more reporting than the Council. For now, one star, partly for the stonewalling, and partly for the comedy value of being told that, in 2025, exporting a contract list or reviewing a valuation inside 18 months is apparently beyond the reach of local government.
