the BEST recommendation from my airBNB hosts was to do the Sawpit Gully Track. What an adventure! Did this anti-clockwise. This city-bred girl was so enthralled by EVERYTHING - 360 views. Took so many videos my phone died and I was only halfway through. THOROUGHLY enjoyed being out there. Some parts were scary for me because of my fear of heights, but such a thrilling challenge. Worth it for the views - my FAV track of the 3 months I spent in NZ.
Arrowtown always surprised. This time with many different varieties of hiking. We have chosen German Hill.nnAccording to satellite maps, looks like you should be able to do a loop. However, this is one way up and down walk and after you can continue with loop.nnTo my opinion from Arrowtown going anticlockwise is better. It says on Arrowtown website no dogs allowed but it looks like very popular place to take dog for a walk.nnWe will definitely explore more in the future and I am interested to take the track from Arrowtown to Coronet Peak.
A fave hike in arrowtown for me. There are a few steep sections, but well worth it for the stunning views along the way. We hiked during autumn so the changing colours of the trees were spectacular- recommend going counter clockwise for the loop.
My absolute favourite must do running trail in Arrowtown. A nice distance around 7ish km circuit back to Arrowtown. Steep, varied terrain including gravel, rocks, hard mud, wet soft mud, tree roots, and some stream crossings possible not to get your feet wet on stepping stones if it hasn't been raining too much. Moderate fitness needed if walking. The track is well worn and clear. Stunning views at the top and the junction with the Big Hill Track over Arrowtown and Lake Hayes. A 1 hour easy pace run or 2 hour walk.
2 ways to do the Sawpit Gully track -nnif you go in a clockwise loop, you start at the scenic part. Go along the small stream and it’s a pleasant walk till you reach the bridge take the right fork and then it’s uphill with shelter from trees most of the time all the way till the hilltop where u can get a nice view of Lake Hayes. Afterwards the track slopes down and narrows on a more exposed path , back to arrowtown.nnIf you go anticlockwise, you start on a shaded path along a water pipe basically going uphill, passing a small waterfall with the uphill stretch pretty rocky at some parts and on exposed terrain with no shade, before reaching the hilltop and enjoying the scenic path till the end.nnAt the hilltop u can choose to hike all the way up an offshoot path leading up to the top of another hill.nnSupposedly a 3 hr loop but I did it in 2hr15min for the clockwise route, it was a pleasant walk with no mosquitoes or sandflies.
