The hill tribes of West Auckland are uniting to fight Watercare's threat to build a huge water treatment plant in the foothills of the Waitakere Ranges, an area of such heritage value that it has its own act of parliament protecting it.
One of the oldest communities in West Auckland is under threat, with Watercare considering building a vast industrial water treatment plant in the middle of an idyllic rural valley that has been worked under the same names for generations. If Watercare chooses this option up to 30 families could be forcibly displaced from their homes and the social and environmental implications for the people left behind in Oratia and the surrounding neighbourhoods are potentially devastating.
