Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari

About

Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari - Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust

Story

Maungatautari volcano rises like a beacon above the Waikato just south of Lake Karapiro. The mountain has two access points which also lead to the two enclosures.

The southern enclosure is off Tari Road (Pukeatua) and the northern enclosure is off Hicks Road (Cambridge). Maps and directions can be downloaded from our website www.sanctuarymountain.co.nz

Mission

To remove forever, introduced mammalian pests and predators from Maungatautari, and restore to the forest a healthy diversity of indigenous plants and animals not seen in our lifetime.

"Sanctuary Mountain is an ancient, vibrant forest protected by a 47km pest-proof fence, the longest of its kind in the world! At 3,400 hectares, it is New Zealand's largest mainland sanctuary and home to many of the country's endangered and at-risk species. Come and experience the New Zealand environment the way it used to be - lush and vibrant with native wildlife including many of New Zealand's rarest plants. Step through the pest-proof fence into another world, where ancient trees tower over well-maintained walking tracks and the air is filled with birdsong. We offer a variety of unique experiences like guided tours and bush walks."

Really impressive walk through the bush. Liz, our volunteer tour guide was very knowledgeable. It was a bit like jurassic park with the fence around the perimeter. The Flora and Fauna was just amazing. To sit and listen to all the, strange to me bird song was amazing. Highly recommend taking the accompanied tour. An excellent experience.
Such an amazing place, it’s an easy walk for families, although didn’t spot all the native birds listed, it feels magical walking in the bush listening to their singing knowing that they are out there. I didn’t know it’s such fun trying to locate the birds with their voices and sometimes they fly right next to you which is a welcomed surprise. Strongly recommend this place, the staff are friendly and I reckon the work they do here is awesome
Fantastic and helpful staff. It was raining when I went ..so truly a rainforest experience! $27 for an adult. Lots of birdsong and amazing native forest!
We found the staff member with dreadlocks rude. You have 5 kids under ten Mommy should leave Daddy alone and then taking the piss out of our accent how long have you been here from South African when we are from England. Next time great the people and help them not pick on your gest. Parking Toilets
We spent close to a day walking around. Heard lots of birds snd saw z few too. The north island robin was a delight, always along the path, seeing if we would kick up anything interesting to eat. Wonderful watching kaka at feeding stations. Saw gecko and weta, Bellbirds, tomtits and fantails. Heard wood pigeons. A lovely day out if you enjoy walking and looking in the nz bush.
You think you are wandering over a huge area and then you look at the map and learn that the kilometers you walked are a tiny fraction of the sanctuary. Amazing. Watch out for the kakas. As usual they are not joking around and will walk right up to you for a handout. Don't be tempted by their friendly ways!
Go on, drive out there and have a wander around. It's a nice walk through the bush and you are doing something for conservation
A lovely experience walking through Sanctuary Mountain. Amazing to see what the project has achieved. All levels of walking tracks. Saw Kaka feeding from a low level and a kereru in the tree. Definitely worth a visit. Support the project.
Its a bird sanctuary and they are making a good effort in taking care of the birds. So lets support them. One thing though, dont expect to be able to see all the birds because its a bird sanctuary where birds can fly around wherever they want. In fact being able to see one is lucky enjoy e moment!
Such an amazing place!! Well worth the drive to be there and we are always happy to contribute financially to such places. The cost to get in is very small. Make sure you go early in the morning because you won't want to leave.
