The Russell Museum shares the stories of Kororāreka Russell and Īpipiri Bay of Islands.nnIt tells the stories of the first Māori arrivals in the Bay, through to the development of Russell / Kororāreka, from a small Māori fishing village, to a port of call for visiting ships and whalers to, today's tourist town nnAmong the museum collections is Māori taonga including a small waka canoe an exact one-fifth scale model replica of Captain Cook's Endeavour, an original whaleboat and mementos of game fisherman, Zane Grey.nnI enjoyed watching the DVD of historic Russell and seeing the exhibitions that are on display in the gallery. It is very well curated.nnThe Russell Museum operates as a registered charity and does not receive any funding for operational expenses. The Museum is self funded by the entrance fee, research charges, and profits from the Museum shop
Highlight of our Labour weekend visit was viewing the local Russell Museum.nAmazing displays and information in a deceivingly small area.nYou were made to feel very welcome from the moment you stepped though the door.
Was very impressed with the presentation. Wonderful collection of history. Fabulous stories. Very friendly helpful staff. The replica of Endeavour is awesome, I can't believe a guy built it in 12 weeks.
Small local museum. $12 entry fee for adults. Full of local history. Worth this visit if you have some time to spare.
Great little museum to get to know the history. Highly recommend.
