The ambient was beautiful and bring back in time. My beef was nicely cooked, and it's my first time to taste a fern, the taste was amazing and the highlight of my beef it was crunchy better than asparagus. Tired a small piece of pork belly meat was soft and the crackling is good except its sticked onto my teeth . The dessert were good and how it should be in fine dining, pistachios tart and my kaipati ice cream on chocolate soil. It was a busy night when we went, can see the staffs were working hard.
We have dined here on numerous occasions & come out of our way to do so. The ambience & that feeling of stepping back into another era is the main reason. The food is another. Menu is matched to reflect the 50s & 60s maybe 20s even, with quirky little twists & quality ingredients. Staff are ultra attentive & food is delivered with perfect timing.
A beautiful classic dining room should have a chef instead of an incompetent cook! Cooking 101 should teach you not to overcook fish. The mussel chowder appetizer was a plate of flour and water glue with only 2 small mussels in it for $27.00. The duck tasted ok but very stringly. A massive let down for what should have been a great dining experience. It was no better when we came 5 years ago. The coffee was good.
Review by Bronwen McDonald : We had high hopes of a lovely fine dining experience, but we’re sorely disappointed. The “Hotel Inspector” would have a field day at The Chateau. While the service was reasonably attentive, the restaurant was very hot rundown and cutlery and glassware not clean. The food is expensive for the quality and quantity which varies table to table. Our meals had obviously been sitting under a warmer for a period of time. There is very little to say about our meals, bland unappetising food that left us feeling like we would have been better off at the local sports bar. While we have dined at The Chateau before this was our first time in the Ruapehu Room, suffice to say we will not return. A very disappointing evening. 1 star - could do much better
It's a pity to leave this average review, as this place had amazing staff and we enjoyed a fantastic high tea at the Ruapehu Lounge last year. The great views and chique ambience remain. I also don't mind the slightly higher prices for such venue, but I do mind if they then don't deliver. The pizza we ordered had so much cheese it was hard to find anything else, the coffee quality was average, and the chef forgot to add satay sauce and an egg to the nasi goreng the rest was nice though. It's still an amazing venue, and I will come back as it's an amazing place, but I do hope they improve things.
Had Xmas dinner at the 7.30 pm - this was the most appaling dining experience I have ever had in my 66 years living!!! I would not recommend anyone eating at the Chateau - the service is so dismal you will never experience it again!!! I can cope with poor food - for the xmas dinner it was seafood, pate etc for the starter and turkey, ham potatoes veges etc for the main they ran out of food so we just got more seafood - mainly prawns done a different way to the starter.., But.... the service was something else entirely!!!!!!! cost of the dinner was $149 head!!! yes $149 for the worst service and food you will every have the waiters all seemed very unhappy - it took 40 mins to order a glass of coke - we could see it over on the bar counter but could not go get it ourselves due to covid and rules going up to counters etc.. we arrived about 30 mins prior to our 7.30 seating time for dinner as we said we would like a pre dinner drink - well this took 40 mins for someone to come ask us about our drinks we wanted - it took 25-30 mins seated before anyone came and gave us water. we just watching as the chaos was going on around us - it reminded me of faulty towers the comedy on the tv from many years ago. Dont waste your money eating here - they should be ashamed of the poor service we got - especially due to the cost and it was a celebration. when we finished eating plates were stacked up the the waiter in front of my husband and took them 20 mins to come take away before desert came. these were all pre made and commerically sourced looking little bites with no taste and all seemed to have the same flavour.
We had a beautiful dinner here as a family on the last night of our stay at the Chateau Tongariro. The service was great and the food perfect. The lamb signature dish for two was a highlight.
Really over priced for what it was. It's "fine dining", but 1950s style with flavourless meat and vege. I don't expect plain broccoli and cauli flower in a meal that costs $100.
Lovely meal , compliments to the chef and also fantastic service from Kajal who really went the extra mile ! Will be back again :
Had a fabulous dinner salmon was delish!. Quite busy but staff were exceptional.
