Very small airport. Just check-in, bag drop, a small kiosk and a small cafe. And probably more seating space than the largest aircraft departing from here has seats. There's no security check either, as far as I can tell, as they're only needed for airplanes with more than 90 passengers in NZ and the largest aircraft to depart from here has less. It took me around 5 minutes from my Uber to the gate, via bag drop and a quick visit to the kiosk! Kinda makes me wonder why bag drop closes 30 minutes before the scheduled departure, surely 15-20 minutes would still be plenty.nnAh, almost forgot, everyone here was super friendly! I mean, I only met 2 people ground staff and kiosk attendant, but still.
Tiny airport with lovely and helpful employees. Plenty of comfortable space to sit before the flight, and lots of chargers available for electronics. You really only need to get there max 30 minutes before. There's a small convenience store for snacks at the departures area and a cafe at the arrivals area.
Nice and clean airport, and the New Zealand airline staff were welcoming and provided great customer service. Restrooms provided availability to take showers which was amazing.
We flew our daughter into Rotorua since the flight was over $100 cheaper than Tauranga, one way. And a nice surprise...FREE PARKING! We made a day of it as tourists in Rotorua. Went to Krabs, great seafood restaurant and had dessert at the lake. A perfect example of not gouging people on parking and contributing to the local economy.
You don't have to be big. Nice, small, friendly airport. Just watch your carry-on and checked bag size. Checked bags 23 kg, and for the carry-on 7 kg you can have a small purse or small backpack Lunch was a tasty snack, grilled ham and cheese, and ice cream. You can have a brew, too.
