Riccarton House & Bush

About

Make our Christchurch history a part of your New Zealand experience - Riccarton House & Bush, Christchurch's first European settlement.

Story

Riccarton House & Bush is a unique New Zealand heritage site consisting of two historic buildings, flanked by beautiful open parkland and ornate gardens, bordered by the River Avon and set against extensive native bush forest featuring Kahikatea trees up to 600 years old. This tranquil 12 hectare reserve is located just 3.5 km from Christchurch city centre.

In 1843 the area known to Maori as Putaringamotu – “the place of an echo” – became home to the pioneering Deans family, the first Europeans to settle the Canterbury Plains. The family’s dramatic story of endurance and tragedy; of dreams, love and promises, is woven into the fabric of these beautifully restored buildings and emerges as you explore the house, grounds and beyond.

Join us for a guided tour of Riccarton House, visit Deans Cottage, take a peaceful stroll through the verdant bush or wander the park grounds before enjoying morning/afternoon tea, lunch and superb coffee, either in the Drawing Room restaurant or outside in our rose garden courtyard.

Very good atmosphere and friendly staff.
This place is incredible. Just a short walk from all the action in Riccarton and it feels like you're so far away from the city.
A very nice market with great produce and friendly people. Beautiful grounds.
Stunning!! But unfortunately no public toilet on NY day.
We come here every weekend for the Christchurch Farmers' market. The markets are great with lots of different stalls selling food and fresh produce. It is very close to the city and can be easily accessed by bike due to the bike lanes and paths. The grounds are large and well maintained. Riccarton House is quite nice as well.
Just a walk through for an 1hr looking at plants and watching the birds quiet time and look at gardens
Stopped here to visit the Riccarton Bush. while here decided to call into the cafe and get the kids some fries and have a coffee. Service was good with friendly staff and great location. Will be going back again for lunch next time
Beautiful old building. The tour is really fascinating and illuminating. A great piece of family history and heritage. The grounds and gardens are a very peaceful place to hand out and have a picnic.

Wonderfully preserved forest and plants, as well as the house and estate from mid 1800's.
