Regent Pahiatua

About

We are a community owned and operated cinema. We screen a selection of mainstream, popular art-house, International, family movies, and documentaries.

Story

The Regent Upstairs Cinema is community owned and staffed by a part time manager and a team of cinema-loving volunteers, situated in the upstairs auditorium of the Regent Theatre, Pahiatua, New Zealand.
The Regent was opened by Kerridge Theatres over 75 years ago on 23 February 1940, and has been owned by the Pahiatua Repertory Society Inc since 1977. Live theatre productions presented by the Pahiatua Repertory Society take place regularly in the 120 seat Downstairs auditorium. The 110 seat Regent Upstairs Cinema is one of only three cinemas operating in the Wairarapa/Tararua region.
We are the only cinema in the Tararua District and the only cinema between Masterton & Waipukurau in Hawkes Bay.
Proudly locally owned and operated and serving the whole of the Tararua District, we can screen fundraiser events and school screenings in addition to our weekly programmed titles. Private DVDs and PC laptop content can be screened via our digital projection system for private events or functions.
In August 2011 we launched a successful fundraising project to completely refurbish our cinema auditorium and to upgrade our projection system to digital. Donations and sponsorship from local residents enabled us to purchase and install comfortable new seats, insulate the auditorium ceiling and line the walls with acoustic panels and drapes which improved not only the appearance but also greatly improved the Dolby digital sound quality. Also, thanks to a very generous grant from the Waireka Community Trust we can now offer patrons with a disability or in a wheelchair or mobility scooter easy and safe access to our upstairs auditorium via a lift from the cinema foyer.
In December 2014 we were granted funding of $80,000 from the Central Energy Trust which enabled us to go ahead with the transition to a fully compliant DCP, 2D & 3D digital projection system. All screenings are now in DCP digital format and dolby digital 5.1 surround sound. Fundraising to complete the auditorium upgrade continues.

Nothing beats live theatre or live music.
It was a wonderful experience watching a movie in a cinema hall which belongs to an era of its own. I loved d arrangement of d seats and lights n sounds were also amazing. Further, it had great staff who loves to explain and guide in a correct way, just a kindhearted man. Amazed by their hospitality and affordable price compared to multiplex. They do offer popcorn and other snacks. You can buy tickets with cash only so if u ever plan take cash with you.
Lovely local cinema, warm & comfy, great sound system & screen, fresh popcorn& treats available..wooden floors for real jaffa rolling reasonably priced, posters for sale too... recommend supporting
Frozen jr was a great show
Just like the old cinemas of my childhood, this place brings it all flooding back. Built in the early days of WWII to replace the old Town Hall that had been razed in a fire, the Regent has been bringing the latest and greatest films to Pahiatua for nearly 80 years. Her charm is definitely on the decrepit side currently, but the overwhelming nostalgia you feel on entering the foyer more than makes up for it. The building itself deserves a revamp, but hopefully the team of community volunteers who run and care for it will be able to fundraise for a new ceiling soon! A beautiful old place that is a jewel in Pahiatua's crown, support your local theatres, we're so lucky to still have them!
So great to be able to support the local cinema. New release movies, Fresh popcorn, friendly staff, clean cinema and they now have eftpos!
Good ticket and food prices, not as flash as a big city theatre but exceeds the expectations of a small town theatre. Massive improvements since i was there as a kid, awesome to ser
Nice place.Great to see the community getting in ,to retain this theatre.
