Regent on Broadway

Story

The Regent on Broadway is a large theatre in Palmerston North, New Zealand, named so because it is the Regent Theatre on Broadway Avenue.

Designed in 1929 by Charles Holingshead of Sydney, the theatre complex was officially opened to the public on 4 July 1930. Its original use was as a cinema / opera house, but, with the decline of the movie over the decades, the Regent closed in 1991. However, the public response was so great, that, in 1993 Palmerston North City Council agreed to contribute the large sum of $10,000,000, followed by a community donation of $1,700,000, and $1,000,000 from New Zealand Lotteries Grant Board.

The auditorium has painted panels on the roof, all of which were cleaned-up during the renovations of the 1990s. The staircase leading up to the mezzanine floor is carpeted in the centre, with marble on the sides. The lobby is carpeted, with a special weave being manufactured by Feltex carpets, and exact copy of the linoleum, still lying underneath the carpet. The mezzanine floor has carved kowhaiwhai panels in the ceiling.

Regent On Broadway is described as being 'among the top four performing arts centres in New Zealand', alongside Wellington Town Hall, Christchurch Town Hall and Auckland Town Hall. The auditorium itself can seat 1393 people; most of these, located on the ground floor, can be removed for functions such as dinners and ballroom dancing. Adjacent to the auditorium are several small dressing rooms, and larger dressing rooms can be found up a flight of stairs. The complex also boasts a large function room, upstairs from the mezzanine, and a rehearsal studio, which is used for numerous activities, ranging from ballets dancing to stage rehearsals. It is still the only large theatre in the greater Palmerston North area.

Truly majestic theatre, felt privilege to visit this historical building, appreciate the work of art and restoration effort put into to make keep the building as it is
The Regent was a fabulous place to hold the Pamly Drag Fest. The sound was not the best, however this did not take anything away from the amazing show put in. Staff showing partrons to there seats were warm and a lot of fun
Great venue for performers and audience members. I highly recommend seating from the second section of seats on the ground level and back. If you are lucky enough to book the front row of seats in the dress circle 2nd floor that level is perfect to watch any shows with big set pieces or scene changes
There for barbershop harmony convention. Great venue, with good facilities. No access to backstage without either walking through theatre, or walking outside, but not a biggie in the overall scheme of things.
This is a beautifully appointed theatre, and quite grand for a small city. The acoustics are pretty good, and a wide range of acts and performances is catered for. The ticketing people are helpful and ushers are respectful and supportive. Seating is fully tiered as should be expected. It pays to be mindful when parking before an event as there is no specific theatre parking; you will need to find your own parking within the central city, or organise other travel arrangements, so plan to be a little early.
Very Helpful staff especially when attending performances with people with a disability.
Magnificent venue; the auditorium alone is worth the price of admission. Acoustics were great to my amateur ear and seats comfortable. Sight lines were also good.
Needs AC during warmer months...too hot inside but otherwise a beautiful structure i side
