Amazing. Lovely to see the new museum. Full of interesting displays, artwork and perfect people full of good and useful information.nNo queues. Small charge to enter. Interesting goods and books for sale.
I had expected this modern museum would merely fill in the time nicely between other sightseeing activities, but it was worth a visit in itself. It mixes in stories about people like the formidable Granny Harrold with interesting local history Although a phone cable was laid across the Foveaux Strait in 1917, Stewart Island only got mains electricity in the 1980s. Everyone is still on rainwater.
Designer building. Style and drama to fit the location. .very new but encloses agood range of history of the island. Lovely start of stories of locals.nSpecial place and people. Easy to find lots to interest everyone.nSouvenirs very tasteful and informative.nGot a great chart of birds and mammals of New Zealand.
Great place to spend a rainy day, entrance fee to the museum is just $10 and you get to learn all about the early settlers on the island and you’ll soon discover all the streets and bays were named after them. It was such a small community many of them were related by marriage. Lots of storytelling and artifacts, many of the locals are donors to the museum and you could sense the spirit of the village come alive. There are some local crafts on sale too. History buffs will enjoy this place for sure.
A nice place to spend an hour or two. The staff were good.nThe displays were well organised and informative, showing the history of the area.
