New Zealand vacation day 3 - visited the kiwi hatchery to learn more about New Zealands national bird. Staff was friendly and we learned a lot about the bird, including that it's endangered and protected and the size of the egg that it produces is equivalent to a woman giving birth to a 16 pound baby...ouch.. We couldn't take pictures of an actual live kiwi.
Due to them being so elusive we cheated as wanted a definite sighting. The guide was very informative and enthusiastic. We saw the eggs mid hatch and a chick being weighed which was so exciting. It was an over load of awwwwww. We also learnt all about the kiwi bird, so are far more informed. Totally recommend it to young and old. Due to their sensitive eyes there’s no photography, the photos are if the taxidermy exhibits.
Nice conservation place, they keep a dark room so you have a chance not guaranteed to see them during the day even though kiwis are nocturnal. The number they have on site though varies a lot through the year so worth ringing to check if they have some you can see before booking as it's not cheap.
Amazing experience. Please book your ticket in advance.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
A great place to learn more about the kiwi bird. We were able to see several chicks and adults. We even got a chance to see a worker do a wellness check on a growing chick.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Interesting facts and displays about Kiwi birds. About 45 mins to an hour. We were lucky that a newly hatched bird was receiving its checkup during our tour. Up close and personal with NZ’s national bird
Center inside Rainbow Springs dedicated to our funky flightless national icon. There's loads of information about the bird & interactive displays to keep the kids occupied. Eventually you can make your way into the nocturnal house where you can hopefully see kiwi poking about in the gloom. We were lucky and got to see all three birds that were there as they were relatively active. No lights or flash photography allowed inside for obvious reasons.
A great place to learn about the kiwi birds. The tour guide was very informative and friendly. The work they do is amazing and meaningful. Support the organization!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
