Story

The Rainbow Falls, Māori name Waianiwaniwa, , are a single-drop waterfall located on the Kerikeri River near Kerikeri in New Zealand.Unlike most New Zealand waterfalls which are created by the erosion of soft rock, the Rainbow Falls are sited on a hard basalt layer of rock beside softer mudstone. The falls were formed when water eroded the mudstone. The 27 metre waterfall is popular with tourists and is regularly photographed from an adjoining Department of Conservation area. The Rainbow Falls Walk is along a track which takes about 10 minutes to traverse to connect to the Kerikeri River Track which is about 3.5 km long and takes about 1.5 hours to walk. It leads to the Kerikeri Basin where Kerikeri's old buildings are sited, the Stone Store, Mission House and St James Church, plus Rewa's Village and historic Kororipo Pa. The track follows the north bank of the River and passes through kiwi habitat and regenerating native trees such as stands of young kauri and totara.

Easy access waterfall with sufficient space to park and walks. Easy 5 min walks to viewpoint and more extensive walks beyond. The waterfall looked magical when we went, after a rainy day the sun shining through. 100% worth a visit and to make it more rewarding, I would suggest walking from town to make the most of it.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
This is a stunning classic vertical freefall, accessible from three separate viewpoints all with a few minutes stroll from the parking lot. All of the viewpoints are excellent. We came during a period of heavy rains, and the flow was breathtakingly powerful. The water was clearly runoff, not the lovely clear water I see in most of the photos, but it was an awesome and thrilling site nonetheless.
Beautiful Falls and bush walks along the river. With the river very full after lots of rain the falls were very impressive. A short drive from Paihia. Lots of parking and good clean toilets. An interesting contraption to walk over and wash your shoes before going through the bush ensuring no seeds and bugs are taken through. A very nice place for a picnic.
Lovely 4km riverside walk from the Stone Store in Kerikeri. The track is well maintained and sign posted. Allow an hour each way for a relaxed walk.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Amazing waterfalls, even saw the rainbow. Beautiful walk up from kerikeri basin to rainbow falls. Approximately 4.3 kilometres to the rainbow falls, another falls on the way. It was a very pleasant time and worth the trek. Stopped at the cafe at kerikeri basin for a cup of tea. Great photo opportunities along the way.
Perfectly fine water fall. Well managed place with proper viewing and walking track. Worth visiting it. Pure natural beauty with water fall sound and freshness of air that can be felt because of dense trees. Very soothing placeVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

A must do experience only 5 mins from Kerikeri. You can access 3 good viewing points of the Rainbow Falls from afar and above within a few minutes walk from the carpark. It's a 3 minutes walk down to the Falls Pool, where there maybe people swimming. Great spot to relax and enjoy the magnificent waterfall
Beautiful waterfall and only a short walk down to the base. There had been so much rain prior to us going, so the water was a little brown but awesome because of the volume.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
