If I were still in my 20s I would have loved this place. Total hostel & seemed like the younger people there were having a blast. Reception was very friendly and the rooms are very basic but clean enough. They have a bunch of different rentals kayaks, surfboards, etc which seem fairly priced.nnAs someone a bit older I struggled with the amount of space in the kitchen to store food, the available kitchen utensils and plates were poor, the overall cleanliness of the kitchen & bathrooms, the number of shower and bathroom stalls, the late night partying right outside our window, etc. I don’t blame Backpackers for this - it’s just the vibe of the place and didn’t suit what we were looking for.
I loved how friendly their front desk staff is! The rooms are small but just enough with comfy beds + it’s very clean especially the bathrooms. Well organized and easy to find ur way around. CBD is walkable with a nice bridge to cross as a shortcut.nI would have wished for a bathing suit dryer manual because we where there on a rainy day and nothing dried till the next surfing day. They do have regular dryers!
Stayed as a group in the Boathouse, which was a like an AirBnB, we also had usee of the hot tub was another bonus. Unfortunately guests from the dorm section kept using the private Boathouse as a walk through on many occasions, despite the staffs proactivity to address this, all of our stuff was in there too.nThe siren which cannot be helped is extremely loud and would recommend for those light sleepers, to pick somewhere further away from town as the fire station is only metres away.nnMany hostels I have stayed in around the world also offer separate reading lights and charger points for each bed/rather than just one plug, have found a large majority in NZ do not offer this, it's a simple thing that massively impacts convenience and would be great to see.nThe bunk beds also had no railings on them at all and were completely open, which really nerved me, as I know it would, other people.
Great location with a variety of ammenties and is super affordable! I'll stay here again on my next trip to Raglan, it's right by the water and pretty quiet. I was lucky to get a whole bunk room to myself because I came in winter, but staff and other residents were super cool and friendly.
Very cute place, hot tub is amazing. Mostly surfing people, I think. Nice atmosphere, location near perfect.
