Have been using Dog Communication for training / socialisation / workshops and classes for more than six years and there are few companies that compare. Having worked with animals myself for many years I am extremely fussy regarding the quality of training and advice I pay for and I cannot recommend Dog Comm highly enough. Laura is not only highly qualified and experienced but kind, ethical and fun to work with. Both my dogs have benefited highly from my association with Dog Comm and their lives are significantly richer as a result and I have learnt so much, met some great people and dogs and had lots of fun! Me and my dogs highly recommend Laura and Dog Communication.
Dog communication have made a huge difference to my dogs life. Laura and Penel have understood his problems and truly helped him overcome his fears and anxiety with great knowledge and compassion all done with lots of space, encouragement and time. The workshops and seminars are also very helpful and good fun too. I would highly recommend them.
I've taken all of my dogs to see Laura and Penel at Dog Communication. Two of my dogs were reactive and through their help, advice and compassionate care, I was able to work through a programme of rehabilitation that turned things around. I've also taken my non-reactive dog to some of their excellent workshops like trick training. They're all about well being for you and your dogs. I can't recommend them highly enough.
We have a dog, Poppy, who we adopted as a puppy when we lived abroad. She had been rescued by an animal charity on the streets at 10 weeks old. By then she had already had a tough and feral life. As a consequence she was fearful of many other dogs and already prone to be reactive if scared. This was made worse after she was badly bitten when she was about 1 year old. She is also scared of many things a lot of dogs won't think twice about - people in hats, gates and swing doors, small spaces like alleys/corridors, brooms, mops, hoovers, loud noises. We brought her back to London 18 months ago when we returned and taking her for a walk in a nation of dog lovers resulted in stress levels to the absolute extreme; so many dogs and so many off leash, even though the majority of them are super friendly, she couldn’t see beyond her fear. As a consequence her hyper-vigilance went off the scale so I obtained a vet referral and met Laura at DogComms on a very cold snowy day in a field. Laura’s first 1-2-1 consultation was very thorough and Poppy had an absolute ball being off leash for the first time in years, racing around, stretching her fast legs and smelling foxes and deer everywhere. We were there for about an hour, and towards the end Laura brought out her dogs - on the other side of the fence. What amazing dogs they are, so polite and respectful that Poppy only felt the need to give them a cursory warning bark then went back to sniffing for foxes. Although that first session was her first experience of snow she was having so much fun she forgot she neither likes wet nor cold weatherLaura’s positivity about Poppy was exactly what was needed to boost our confidence on dog walks. Laura also said that Poppy would be totally welcome coming to group classes, which I had not expected after years of hyper-vigilant behaviour. Following that first 1-2-1 Laura provided a thorough and detailed written report, to which I still refer back and I follow the guidance on all our walks. Lockdowns and school commitments have intervened for a while, but we have managed to attend some group sessions since that first 1-2-1. I was apprehensive before the first group session, but the space all owners and dogs are given meant there was no tension or reactivity on Poppy’s part, nor any of the other dogs there. Just a watchful, interested, calm participation. Poppy will always be a vigilant dog, but as long as she is on her leash and other dogs are at a reasonable distance away and do not come too close she no longer automatically lunges or growls at every single one we see. She will often now ignore dogs that bark or growl at her - as long as they are at a distance.. and preferably smaller than her. It can be stressful, and sometimes upsetting, having a reactive dog, but they are reactive for a reason and they can benefit greatly from kindness, patience and teaching, which is what Dog Communication offer. As long as Poppy has her human family, is treated kindly and with respect, and is walked in a way that ensures she feels safe, she’s living her best life.
I’m afraid we don’t share the positive experience that others have shared. While the advice might be good- actually getting that advice and the follow up were extremely disappointing. We waited 3 weeks for initial appointment, which was cut short. We were promised: guide sheets by end of week, report to us and vet within a week, and dates and times of options for next one to one. We had to chase and a week later got the report. We reminded Laura that vet required report and we wanted one to ones booked in. Again asked for dates/times for next appointment- nothing. A week later chased and told can only make appointment 2 days before. Nothing provided so chased again. 3 weeks later- vet has no reports so we ended relationship. If you do think you might want to use Laura’s services I would ask directly on ability to meet promises made and to get appointments. Laura refunded £50 of the £250 fee but it’s such an expense and actually we are now a month behind because of delays getting reports and no one to ones taken place. Just unprofessional and expensive to boot.
Cannot recommend Laura and Penel at Dog Comm highly enoughly, they are not only excellent trainers and behaviourists but also offer unlimited support and have a wealth of knowledge and information. Having tried numerous trainers before going to Dog Comm I had all but given up hope especially when I had been told my dog was untrainable and should be PTS but with their help both I any my reactive dog have come a long way.
