Project Tongariro, known for many years as the Tongariro Natural History Society or TNHS) is made up of people throughout New Zealand with a love for Tongariro National Park and the surrounding areas and whom have a commitment to conservation. Since establishment in 1984, as a living memorial to five people who died in a helicopter accident on Mt Ruapehu, Project Tongariro has contributed to promoting and supporting conservation efforts in and around Tongariro National Park. Project Tongariro has a management agreement with the Department of Conservation, which has been our key partner since establishment.
