Story

Birdling's Flat, originally named Te Mata Hapuku, is a settlement in Canterbury, New Zealand, close to the shore of Lake Ellesmere / Te Waihora.Birdling's Flat also commonly refers to the nearby pebble beach that is part of Kaitorete Spit. The beach is well known as a place to find small agates and a variety of other attractive rounded pebbles. Due to strong ocean currents, swimming and surfing is not advised.Birdling's Flat is named for the Birdling family, who were the first European Settlers to farm the area. William Birdling was the first member of the Birdling family to arrive in New Zealand. He was employed by George Rhodes in 1843 to come to Banks Peninsula and work as his overseer. William built a house, Waikoko, in the area which was later to bear his name.On 16 May 1882, a branch line railway was opened to Birdling's Flat from a junction with the Southbridge Branch in Lincoln. This line became known as the Little River Branch, with the extension to Little River opened on 11 March 1886. The railway served Birdling's Flat until its closure on 30 June 1962. The railway's old formation remained well preserved and has now been revitalised into a public walking and cycling track, the Little River Rail Trail.

The lodge, property and staff were beyond our best possible experience! You are treated like royalty during your stay. My hunting guide Mark, in 4 days I would consider him a friend, not a guide!!! Truly a gentlemen! Shawn, Kay, Darrin, Ben and Jody are some of the best cooks and bar tenders I have ever seen!!! House keeping..... every detail to your trip these people have it figured out. Will be hard to top this trip ever!
Absolutely loved this place. The accomodations and service were top-notch. The food and drinks were tasty, the people were friendly, and the views were magnificent. Thank you Poronui, we had such a great time!Rooms: 5/5
This place is amazing; and our hosts wonderful. Enough said.
Regardless of what you are looking for in a visit to New Zealand, or to the Kiwi within looking for a memorable experience, the genuine kindness radiates to a feeling of home. The comfort of that warmth brings relaxation and admiration. Coupled with the professionalism and care of too many to list by name, my only regret is to leave such a remarkable place. Great people, a beautiful place, and an unsurpassed experience. Many Thanks, Ross
I went there 20 years ago. The food and fishing are great. The staff are wonderful and hassle free. November 2017 returned eve Reilly and staff make the details of your stay run smooth. It was a perfect 10.
Breathtaking location, lovely people, a real experience.Rooms: 5/5
Curtis and I couldn’t have been more delighted with our father-son experience at Poronui. Such warm hospitality and personal attention to every detail! We felt spoilt from start to finish. Eve was the PERFECT host and every one of the Poronui staff shared her “nothing is too much trouble” attitude. Marc proved to be an amazing and amazingly patient! fishing guide and bent over backwards to make our days on the river truly memorable; Claire let nothing fall through the cracks; Nancy’s massage was the best I’ve ever had; Ben’s food was gourmet standard, even down at the Safari Camp, and it was no problem whatsoever for Chris to drop everything and drive us up to the top of the property for an incredible view and a leisurely downhill walk back to the Lodge. My son and I will never forget the glamping! Blazing star-filled night skies, roaring bonfire, the music of the nearby rapids, the old wood fired stove indoors for the odd rainy patch and, of course, Ben’s food. We can’t recommend Poronui highly enough and will definitely be heading back!!
Attention to detail, service, five star food!Rooms: 5/5
The best fly fishing you can find. Great guides and an excellent staff. Small, personal and comfortable. Beautiful location, watch the sheep as the fog rises from the stream.
