About

Pit Park, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Story

This six and a half hectare site, in what is now an established residential area of Palmerston North, was once a Totara forest above loess and clay soil. The clay from the Pit was used by the Brick and Pipes Ltd. after they first opened in1890 to manufacture bricks and later field tiles. In order to meet local demands for bricks the owner R.P. Edwards built a Hoffman Kiln above the site in 1904. At its peak the kiln was producing 9,000 bricks a day.The final firing of the Hoffman Kiln happened in 1959. The clay pit gradually fell into disuse after this and became a wasteland. It was colonised by noxious weeds and used for rubbish dumping.

The pit is now being developed into a passive recreation space for the P.N. community. This is a community initiated project, with the Pit Park People (all volunteers) working in partnership with the Palmerston North City Council. The site is being planted with native species and most of the seeds and trees for this project are being sourced locally. The pit will also be a restored habitat to encourage native birds back into the urban environment..

You are invited to be a part of this project by growing plants, taking part in plantings, assisting with plant maintenance and working parties or anything else you may be able to help with.

"This historic quarry has been raised from a wasteland by a passionate group of residents. Short tracks wind through native wetland before opening into a large meadow. It's a great spot for dog walking and frog-spotting!"

The Pit is a large park with a field and a wetland path area. Its stairs, hills and winding gravel paths make it excellent for runs or dog walks. While it's still unfinished and could be maintained better, it's gradually improving. The car park is also never open but you can use the skogland park one.
A stroll here in the evening is pleasant. Bushland paths offer a chance to relax. The sunset is a must-see before ending your evening stroll. There are times when we forget to see the beauty around us. In this busy, tensed and blind world, it is hard to see the hidden treasures within nature. There are a variety of plants here and tiny birds that are welcoming you with smiles. Respect and acceptance of nature should become our virtues. Let nature help us become better humans.
A massive park and allows dogs off leash! Grass is mowed but the path and park inside doesn’t look maintained. The water is kinda dried out with one pond still here but full of algae … There was glass and a burnt tire on the top of the hill, so looks like young people come here at night which may not be safest time to come.
Former Quarry that is being restored to a small lake, wetlands, football training grounds and small bush walk
Nice walk in the town
So beautiful open peaceful freedom
This is an absolute amazing Oasis & a beautiful little bit of paradise. A friend suggested I check it out & just want to let people know about it as well. It has a wetland if your nice & quiet you can hear the frog's with a lovely boardwalk. Lots of native bush with Tui's, Waxeyes & Fantails. It's my go to place for a relaxing walk or run
Bit run down Tbh, Skip and Container been there for ages and you can't get into the carpark.
