I have been doing lessons with Phil and Zen on and off for the last 3 years - they have been amazing at giving me so many tools - from basic technique, safety and etiquette, to respecting the ocean and reading waves, and gaining confidence in the water. They are both so passionate about people having a good time and riding good waves - even on tough days, they make sure I leave with a smile. I remember Phil giving me advice after seeing me try to catch waves on my own one day, even before I started my lessons with him. I get something out of every session with them and their knowledge and understanding of the coast at Piha is unparallel. I can't recommend them more, regardless of where you are in your surfing journey.
If you're looking to catch some waves and elevate your surfing to the next level, then you'll want to hear about super surf instructor Phil! Whether it's your first time on a board or you're looking to perfect your cutback, his super tips will have you surfing like a pro in no time! ‍In addition to that, he has an infectious enthusiasm that makes every lesson a blast.  To top it all off, you'll go home with a video and/or photo of your performance. Definitely one of the best surf lessons I have ever had.
I did a group lesson with Piha Surf School. I enjoyed it very much, after a basic but careful explanation we jumped into the water. The wind and waves were dragging us towards the rocks, but every time we got too close, the teachers two promptly pointed us away.nAs well as trying us out on our own, they took turns helping us catch the first waves! It was really nice and the waves at Piha have incredible strength!
We scheduled a private lesson and had a morning we’ll never forget. Simply spending time on Piha Beach is memorable in and of itself, but adding a surf lesson was the cherry on top. Our instructor was fantastic and helped us both get up several times. It was both of our first times surfing, so this was bucket list. Highly recommend!
Phil is an excellent teacher and a wonderful ambassador for surfing and the Piha community. My 10-year-old daughter and I live in the UK and we were in NZ for 3 weeks in August. Despite being winter, we had our hearts set on receiving a surfing lesson at the iconic Piha beach. We are both novice surfers and Phil was more than happy to provide us with a personalised lesson on the basics of surfing before spending a couple of hours in the water helping us ride the waves at a sheltered end of the beach. The environment was safe, but the experience was still thrilling and both my daughter and I felt a real sense of achievement. The wetsuits provided by Phil kept us comfortable in the winter temperatures and the boards were lightweight and suitable for our level of ability. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and would strongly recommend Phil to anyone who is looking for a surfing instructor.
