My name is Philip Wessels. I am a Counselling Psychologist in private practice, registered with the Psychologists' Board of New Zealand. I also work as a Vocational Consultant in a contractor capacity, providing psychological and vocational services on ACC contracts.
I hold a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology (with distinction) and a BA degree in Theology (with distinction).
I am trained in a variety of therapeutic modalities and specialise in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Systemic Therapies. CBT’s efficacy as an evidenced-based therapy is thoroughly demonstrated and documented in research and tends to be a briefer form of therapy, depending on the nature of the problem. I also provide longer term therapy for more complex challenges.
I am passionate about empowering my clients to overcome their experienced difficulties, enhancing their relationships and more effectively dealing with the challenges of daily living. My approach focuses on facilitating a safe environment to improve physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. I collaborate with my clients on the therapeutic journey to help them gain insight into their situation by encouraging the development of skills to help transform thinking patterns, better manage emotions and encourage helpful behaviours.
In addition to CBT, I specialise in Interpersonal Therapies that focus on improving relationships with others in various life domains. I also provide life- and executive coaching and have corporate experience in addressing work stress, burnout, time management, organisational dynamics and work/life balance.
My practice offers a variety of services and my approach to therapy, counselling and coaching is confidential, solution focused, and empowering. Furthermore, I use techniques from different therapeutic approaches to suit my clients’ specific needs.
