Petone Historical Society

Story

The Petone Historical Society was formed in 1982 at a time when it was felt that little existed in the way of recording the social history of the town.
The core work of the Society is to record the many histories of the town and tell it's stories.

Cool place to learn more about the history and story of Petone. Learned so much from this place and now going for a drive around Petone, we were able to point out different places, which were so rich of history and culture. How blessed we are to have such a museum that's able to showcase this beautiful history.
A great wee spot, informative and well presented. It's not a big museum, but the exhibits are well chosen and interesting. The place is clean and thoughtful. Again, it doesn't take ages to get around, but well worth a visit. Closed Monday& Tuesday, but open the rest of the week, and free to go to. Can't go wrong, really.
Small but extremely interesting free museum. Divided into two sections, "Men's" and "Women's", showcasing photographic and artefactual history of settlement and industrial development in Petone. I found the recording at the "Milk Bar" in the Women's section about society's norms fascinating.
Although, it looks small from the outside, there are lots of nice exhibits inside. The staff was very cheerful and helpful. I specially enjoyed the 25 mins video about the history of New Zealand. Highly recommended. It will take you less than an a hour. It is worth it.
Though a small museum but gives you a glimpse of settlement and how life was in early days...houses, fmcg products, music, etc...not much for small kids but certainly informative for kids 5+...n then have a walk on lovely petone beach....

An excellent museum with great memories of GMNZ Petone. A highly recommended visit. A coin donation would be a great idea

This museum is great for learning the history of Petone . Very helpful staff. Well layed out. Enjoyed the old news reel moments of Petone. No toilets but public toilets 200 meters down the foreshore path.
